I think this weapon system can be remote operated and manual fired. If you notice there is an integrated optical system on top and it could be linked to the fire control system. It seems that it does not have an independent tracking system.

There is also a plus to making this system switchable from remote to manual if the fire control system is down the crew can man the gun and stay in the fight.

What ship is this weapon being mounted on?

  如果麦克廓蔻(McCorkle)看得广一点,他可能会与中国河北炮兵工程学院的王英相遇。早在1981年,王英阅读了费尔(Fair)的第一届电磁发射学术会的论文集并决定把这一课题作为他的终身研究方向。开始时支持他的人很少,但在过去十年以来他和他的学生们在中国的22个学校和军事研究所建立了电磁发射的研制机构。他和瑞扯-玛绶(Richard Marshall)合写了关于这一课题的两本教科书。

coil gun or "rail gun" was part of ronald reagan star war program, but it abandone.according to the BBC documentary, several engineers claim that the technology far more suited to tactical,rather than strategic.
one draw back ,is that when fire the gun,the rail will be hot,that it actually melt the rail.making it unusable.

I think its a good idea. Just like commercial airliner plane, it can go on auto pilot mode but once sometime not right. He just need to overwrite the auto mode and go manual.

But I think the gunner need to take high G to be one of the criteria. lol.

A friend of mine actually made a small railgun-type device for a school project. So the technology is certainly feasible.

There is a group of people in the UT ece department who are working on a railgun right now so I think at least the U.S. government is very interested in the development of railguns.

I know quite a number of naval enthusiasts who would love to see the return of battleships via the railgun.

I wonder what is the advantages of a rail gun. Also I have read about the coil gun structure, which I think is also quite valid.

Can anyone update me in the advantages and disadvantages of both the Rail gun and the coil gun and their practicality.

The railgun could propel projectiles to higher speeds than conventional firearms and doesn't require powder. The latter is especially important for naval ships in which space and fire safety are top concerns.

Most people are not aware of the difference between railguns and coilguns. The "railguns" in the game Halo, for example, are better classified as coilguns since the projectiles are not in contact with the "rails". In an railgun the projectiles are in contact with two parallel metallic "rails" in which the current could run and the projectile itself conducts electricity. The lorentz effect causes the projectile to move forward with great speed. The coil gun utilizes a series of coils instead. When a current passes through the coils a magnetic field is generated in the middle of the coil (kinda like the transformer) and the projectile is launched forward.

The main problem with both rail and coil guns right now is the power consumption. I believe some devices are in the range of megawatts. Since railgun rounds come in contact with the barrel the rail gun also generates tremendous wasteheat every time it fires a round. This also means that the barrel will wear out faster than conventional guns.
