The US didn't claim it. They signed a treaty not allowing claims. Therefore, what the US wants is irrelevant here.

The traditional method to stake a claim was to plant a flag, bring back geological samples and formally claim it. Kinda disavowed that last part, bucko.

smh.
Like those Native Americans that signed treaties with Americans and found out treaties mean shit. If the US is powerful enough, all treaties can go to trash.

Beside, I am just mocking the irony of the US claiming to defend the world against evil China.

TBF, I think you will find most nations violate their treaties. It's not just an American bad behavior. That said, what was done to the Native Americans was genocidal. There was a quote I remember from reading a book about the Balkans where the Hungarian official threatened to do to a group what the Anglosaxons had done in North America.

fair. mockery is earned. I'm for different nations - not just the US or China - buildin in space. The last 30 years have shown a lack of competition and pure cooperation lead to stagnation. So let there be competition. The US not allowing China into the ISS was probably a boon to the world, even if the US thought they were handicapping an enemy.

Well, that might be true but for the last few centuries due to the power is lopsided in favor of the Western colonial powers, the rest of the world was actually at the receiving end of getting treaties modified, changed or nullified.

The space is big enough for all humanity. Cooperation or not cooperation doesn't matter much. Competition is good but I doubt China is serious interested in competition with the US. At least for now, China didn't prioritize space development as there are other priorities. Maybe a few years down the road, we will witness a truly new space competition that is inspired by the new interests from the private sector.

The US nor USSR (RF) nor China or any of the nations with an actual space program ever signed the Moon treaty save for France.
the treaty. It was written and imposed by nations who lacked any for of space programs at the time.
like the audience directing an orchestra.
if anything has been a hindrance to space development. Which leads to the Artemus accords pushing the alliance of private property in space for peaceful purposes. As that accord grows it can become a treaty and overturn the Moon treaty.

Any treaty is meaningless without enforcement. Good luck with forcing China and Russia to comply with any treaty they are not part of.

Congratulations the moon treaty also has no means of enforcement.
Oh Space Pirates and Privateers… Avast Ye land Lubbers. Walk the Airlock!!

Chinese private enterprise would probably be all for the resource mining opportunities that private property laws would allow. The Russian space program is pretty stagnant. Which is what the moon treaty leaves you. LEO to GSO with the occasional probe and the once in a lifetime flags and footprints. If you want to see actual development not just probes and space stations you need to incentivize beyond just the government monopoly.
