The Europeans were depending on Soyuz launches from Kourou to launch Galileo satellites. With all the sanctions they put on Russia's aerospace sector, the Russians stopped providing them with Soyuz launchers. So now they have a nice clean pad they cannot use for anything. Ariane 6 is supposed to be the replacement, it uses its own pad, but it is several years late.

If they say there won't be reusable rockets for a decade, then they likely won't be available for two decades. Where is the funding? They cannot design and put a new rocket into service in less than 15 years, if you look at their recent track record, and that is if they actually started funding it.

Analysis

The Emirati's Hope Mars Mission twitter video published February 5th 2021 was absolutely stunning.

Indeed no other official space agency had previously tried to humiliate another nation's space agency, by adding insult to injury, with a specially vicious footage of a Chinese Long March rocket botched space launch that ended up with many ground casualties.

Rivalry between the United Arab Emirates' HOPE mars orbiter and China's Tianwen Mars rover should never sink to that low.

Not seen even between the NASA and the Soviet Union, or Iran's and Israel's space agencies.

So what was the message? Karma.

Conclusion

There are red lines that no one should ever cross.

But if this occurs then it means something terrible will happen.

The US didn't claim it. They signed a treaty not allowing claims. Therefore, what the US wants is irrelevant here.

The traditional method to stake a claim was to plant a flag, bring back geological samples and formally claim it. Kinda disavowed that last part, bucko.
