What this tells me is that the country is a frickin basket case. It is more of a tribal confederation than an actual country. No wonder the junta wants to centralize everything. It is a mess. Anyway I don't get why they took down the government in the first place.
Sure they had stunted development because of the country being like this but at least it wasn't in an actual civil war.

The Junta, as in the old junta, before the 2015 election, were largely responsible for this mess in the first place (although, in many ways it was like this way since its founding)

Does the Shan State Army-North (SSPP) actually have any relations with China as claimed here?

Hard to say. The SSPP is turquoise and TNLA is the green on the map I previously posted. The town they surrounded is Lashio. I think the only thing we know is that China doesn't want a full blown civil war in Myanmar right now.

I think they should have some. They used to oppose the (back in the day) KMT-affiliated Shan Army (South) which was merged with Khun Sa's drug operations.

(As always, correct me if I'm wrong)
