One thing I need to clarify here:

Southern Xinjiang is a lot more dangerous when compared with Northern Xinjiang when it comes to ethnic tension/terrorist activities.

And I am pretty sure Xinjiang was more peaceful in the 80s, 90s and 00s as we heard more things in China than people from overseas.

By the way, student cultural exchanges usually go to the capital, not small cities, villages, swamps, mountains and deserts, as far as I know, at least for Chinese high school students, no matter how big Xinjiang is. I dont know much about student exchange programmes overseas though.

America's firewall in this regard, as regards this particular brand of tyranny, was taken down on 911. We have not forgotten.

I personally respect you, but Jeff, page 2 and page 3 of this thread alone, shows you many evidences the "taken down" of firewall you mentioned, is more a good wish than reality in the very country (which I describe as "wields power") you (which I describe as "respons... (to the world) of") at.

It took me some efforts to compose the last sentence of post #25, and I think it reflect the truth.

Radical Islamic Jihadists are nothing more than crazed fanatical ideologists, pushing a political and cultural tyranny disguised as religion. They seek to kill or enslave the world, plain and simple.

There is no middle ground with such, just as there was no such middle ground with the fanatical Nazis or fanatical Imperialist. Absolute and utter defeat must be handed to them, and those who support them...wherever they may be found.

America's firewall in this regard, as regards this particular brand of tyranny, was taken down on 911. We have not forgotten.

No Jihadists are indigenous. Modern Radical Islamic Jihad in forms of terrorist attacks was invented by the West to serve their "national interest" during certain period. British invented the modern Jihad and introduced to the Arabs to make them fight the Turks in WWI (remember the movie "Lawrence of Arabia" and train blown off scenes?). The current crops of Jihadist were cultivated by United State, as a tool to fight USSR in the 70s and 80s (when Bin Laden was a "freedom-fighter").

There is an NHK document about the Jihadists in Pakistan. In one scene, it showed that the textbooks preaching Jihad to the kids in Pakistan was made with the help of U.S. Agency for International Development (with USSR being the target of Jihad of course).

The NHK video can be found here. It is in Japanese with Chinese caption. If someone found an English version that will be great. The scene about the Jihad textbook in Pakistan schools starts at 33:37.

Thread in MP.net about this issue. The china haters say that is not terrorism but liberation.

This is exactly what I would expect. It is true that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. If the attackers were not Muslim probably BBC and NYT would have front page editorials demanding the release of captured attackers, and Hillary would like to meet with their leaders and shake hands.

The cause of the violent Xinjiang separatists is doomed. They have hardly any of the conditions for a successful insurgency. They're isolated from the majority of the population (even in their own community), easily profile-able by the security services, they have hardly any access to serious weapons, no foreign support, and the Chinese government is not the type to be swayed by terrorist violence. Nor does China have any legal protections that will constrain the security forces in whatever they want to do. Even worse for the separatists, they're quickly being demographically swamped by Han Chinese who will make any separatist ambition totally nonviable. These attacks will go away simply as a matter of time.

They are more of a law enforcement menance rather than a full blown security issue. Mob syndicates and mexican drug lords can probably do more damage than them.

Given that the CCP came to power starting from a form of insurgency they should know how to deal with this.

MP.net has the most racist and Sinophobic remarks on an online forum. Many of them have been brainwashed by their biased media beyond recovery that it is so pointless to argue with so much ignorance and arrogance. It's a blessing that servicemen aren't politicians who are at least reasonable.

MP.net is not even close to the ones that really preaching Sinophobia. If current trend continues, more and more people will be brainwashed beyond recovery.
