Japan would have lost out anyway due to its demographic limitation. US made its decline orderly. The US Hawks do not want friends, they want vassals, relationships of convenience, that as long benefit the US they are OK with it, go back to 80s and early 90s when Japan was the top economic dog, the message from US politicians was not different the what you see from China today, blaming Japan for every single job loss and so on, Japan was seeing as colonizing the US.
US politicians did absolutely everything in their hands to damage the Japanese economy, they force them to sign a unfair and damaging treaty that destroyed their economy, the US weaponized trade and they attacked their semiconductor industry. And the Japanese just take it, is was so bad that is unbelievable that the Japanese didn't realigned themselves with the soviet block. But everyone in Japan just seem to have very short memories.
People laugh at Hispanics before now now look there population growth and real investments in southern US States and Mexican FDI that is complementing each other. Japanese and Koreans are benefiting from it as they have industrial investments across both sides of the border.
Russia/Soviet very different. Japanese or Korean can do initial investment but practically zero chance that investment can prosper.
