This year’s snow crab harvest in the U.S. state of Alaska has been canceled after billions of crustaceans disappeared from the waters of the Bering Sea. Between 2018 to 2021, the snow crab population shrank by 7 billion, going from 8 billion to 1 billion, according to state officials. Officials cited overfishing as their reason for canceling the season. Scientists are skeptical of overfishing as the cause of population collapse, putting more blame on climate change. Snow crabs are cold-water species, scientists say, and are found in water temperatures below 2 degrees Celsius. But, warming oceans and the disappearance of sea ice have made the ocean more inhospitable for the species.
