The Philippines used to be a Spanish colony, and it became an American colony after some old war.
The age of decolonization kind of ended around 65 years ago when everyone broke free and declared independence in Africa.
But the American military remained in the Philippines due to the threat of communism. The original Cold War ended 30 years ago.
Americans are still there in the Philippines with their military. For what exactly?
Now we are going to see Filipino leadership who detests the Americans.
Also, they will look to China for more investment.
We can see which direction the wind is blowing.
In the old days, when confronted with a political situation like this, the CIA will go back into its bag of tricks and do that coup thingy again.

@horse bro for the Chinese an alliances is burden just look at North Korea, it is better to coalesce or an understanding than a formal alliance, you will have freedom to moved and act and only the weak seek it, just look at India as an example a willing participant in the QUAD but was let go cause it was a burden to be associate with.
What ASEAN needs is a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, this will release quiet some of the pressure the US is cooking in the Region. If China can start developing their resource sharing deals with their counterparts in the SCS and ASEAN people can feel some of the profit sharing from those deals. I think US propaganda will loose some of its effectiveness in building up pressure in the Area.

Here is a Zhang Weiwei recollection of the visit by Mrs Marcos to Beijing in 1984 (in Chinese) .
She was a very interesting and forthright character who wanted to see Deng Xiaoping in the visit. She also talked about the murder of Aquino. According to her he was not killed killed by Filipinos as they couldn't really shoot straight haha.
