Japan's government has been in a coma since the early 90s. It only woke up briefly to approve nuke plants in tsunami zones and run up the highest debt ratio in the world to subsidize pensioners. I can't say I blame them for distrusting it.
Yeah, I tend to share the same sentiment. Also, I got a different perspective, maybe I am full of it, then again maybe not.
From memory, every time some place nationalized assets kicking the Americans out, the Americans took the loss. Sometimes the Americans would come back, coups or attacks, but that rarely works for them in the long run.
That the Americans are playing this game and not some two-bit tinpot, shows that the Americans have nothing left to confront China.
China is now the rich man. This only happens to rich people. China is the largest creditor. It happened too fast, even the Chinese could not adjust to the realities on the ground fast enough, the same realities that they help to create.
I think China should set up military bases around the world, or supply the equipment.
Right now, the Americans want to dismember random countries at will. Countries need protection now. Either you join the Board of Peace paying the protection money, or be a tough guy or woman and get some real good weapons and in very large quantities.
If the Houthis can manage, then nation states with a proper military should be able to do so as well.

Its a telegraphic move by the Panama, the US and China knowing that they haven't cross the Chinese redline. Now it will be different if Greece nationalize the Piraeus port, that port was owned by a COSCO and part of BRI. What China needs is a black ops style mercenary Wagner group to basically do the non official cover (NOC) wetwork that requires doing with plausible deniability for the Chinese. Steal a port from China? Guess what, you now have rebel groups popping up and bearing down on that same port and causing civil unrest and chaos in your nation. Personal anecdote, i used to work with this person who would fly off at the handle at the drop of a hat and wouldnt understand nuances, and similarly we have countries and peoples like the filipinos and anglo australians who lack self awareness and think they can cause chaos and war in China's neighbourhood and steal Chinese assets.
