I very much hope many, many of the indian generals/admirals are like this-stupid,arrogant and corrupt-no wonder india has been attacked/conquered so many times.
The Indian military high command has never excised its hubris or its delusional assumptions. When the British left their newly created nation-state, India absorbed all of the British Raj territories (hence the ongoing disputes with China over Tibet and Aksai Chin). They also assumed they had inherited British military prowess. That hubris and arrogance were on full display when they fought China in 1962, only to be thoroughly humiliated. To this day, they still place the blame on the equally pompous and arrogant Nehru and his high-caste generals.
Introspection is not a strong suit in Indian culture, and even less so in Hindutva culture. They are far more concerned with izzat and log kya kahenge (“what will people say”).
One only has to look at India’s so-called military modernization drive under Modi. More than ten years have passed, and the Air Force remains undermanned and ill-equipped. But no worries — according to some “world air force ranking” publication staffed mostly by Indians, they are still ranked ahead of communist China.
They constantly invoke the phrase “mother of democracy” and “the largest democracy in the world,” as if that means anything for economic development or military modernization. As a result, people in the country, along with the babus, remain inattentive and lackadaisical about the urgency of their military programs.
Arrogance mixed with denialism is a deadly combination that produces inaction. So when a possible (even if unlikely) kinetic conflict between China and India eventually occurs, and India gets walloped by China as expected, the usual hand-wringing and blame-shifting will follow. It will be a rinse-and-repeat episode of every major failure India has faced as a modern nation-state since 1947. Sad all around.
