Such war culture depends and fluctuates on the cultures of each dynasty; tang dynasty was definitely more warlike than the song for instance and the fact that uprisings and revolutions are frequent when Chinese citizenry are dissatisfied with incompetent leadership are proof that Chinese culture possesses what the Germans call “that Faustian spirit”. Looking at how docile the Anglo led western public is and how eager they are to follow their feudal lords’ diktat to make war on China rather than doing as the French did and mount a revolution makes me wonder how much of that adventurer spirit was really their own myth making.
I’m old enough to remember when western Atlanticist Anglo commentators told Chinese and Asians that they could never innovate because they clamped down on free speech.
