It's by definition significantly worse than a prison sentence. When you leave prison, the prison doesn't get to keep most of your assets, your children, and continue to garnish your post-tax earnings for its own upkeep and maintenance. The prison also doesn't spend its time trying to teach your kids to hate you after you finally get out of there.

Simple. Don't get married. If you do, make sure a valid and enforceable prenup is required (can be invalidated by state laws if not compliant). Don't have kids unless you're Chinese in China. We have to help accelerate population decline in the West.
