I saw the documentary and whatever respect I had for Gen.Mattis evaporated after learning that he was so convinced by the vaporware the charlatan was selling that I thought to myself: this dude was made out in all western media as this "Warrior Scholar" when he's dumb as a rock.

That’s overthinking it. The training cost datapoint alone is meaningless without the performance capabilities of the AI model to out it into context. Anyone with money can blow $5.5m training up an utterly useless AI model that is light years behind OpenAI and no one would care.
It’s only because the DeepSeek AI model is better than OpenAI’s that the true implications are becoming known.
So I don’t think anyone outside of Liang’s own hedge fund and maybe people close to him and his team would have had enough info to make such a bet. Maybe rumours were circulating beforehand, but I think few would have made huge bets against the market on just rumours considering what DeepSeek achieved was basically not just considered impossible but was actually unthinkable according to the western AI expects across the board before they proved it was possible.
Some might have lucked out on when they sold their stakes in Nvidia, but I would be amazed if many big shorts were taken against it.
