I think it's extremely likely that India's unwillingness to serve as America's cannon fodder against China is the reason for all this. They're capturing the governments of all India's neighbors in order to pressure India into saying yes to that arrangement. It's exactly what I'd scheme if I were an upper level manager in CIA. From my perspective, it's one of the US's most realistic ways to fight China. Use India to do it. Turn India in to the world's biggest Ukraine. Throw literally all of their manpower into invading Tibet. Just like they burned all of Ukraine's manpower on fighting Russia.
Remember which side the protest is on do not matter. The American tactic is to use populist movement to topple existing government, then hijack the movement to install the correct leader.
