Australia is not just staring down a potential lost decade of no economic growth now that they can't rely on China for economic growth. It's not just that, perhaps Australia is thinking about changing tone.
I don't think Australia has such a serious problem as some people think. Quad (US) strategy is to promote India's growth so that they can redirect some of the lost exports to india. Yes I know that this will take some time but it will happen. I expect India in 2021-2023 will approve a major infrastructure program which will boost Australia's exports.Australia is not just staring down a potential lost decade of no economic growth now that they can't rely on China for economic growth.
They're also staring down the prospect of China escalating tensions by invoking UNHCR investigations into atrocities against afghans by the australian SAS.
China does not control the narrative. And has never been very good with soft power. That’s the core issue for a lot of these things. People has this perception about China and it’s now made worse by US-China tension. China has a hard time countering this perception.China is blamed for the coup, yet it seems like their interests are being damaged the most.
All western leaders abandoned Suu Kyi after she embarrassed them by letting the Tatmadaw run rampant against the Rohingya.
Suddenly China is behind her ouster??
Also ignores the reality that the Burmese military has never had great relations with China. The northern autonomous ethnic minorities have always enjoyed better relations with China than the government proper. This has always been a huge sore point in relations.
This reminds me of the CIA tactics that brought Suharto to power, blaming China and Indonesian Chinese working with Sukarno to bring Communism to destroy Indonesia.
@voyager1 that is well and good the problem is where will they get the money and investment? the US ,they need every cent they can get to jump start its economy, Japan had been burned many times (India HSR is an example) and who will invest in a money pit of a country like India? remember they are also competing with China for major investment and you can see where the money is flowing. This pandemic and the resulting economic depression will undone the gain India had achieve for the last 15 years and will have a lackluster growth for the additional 15 years (I'm being generous) whatever the Quad intention is the reality on the ground says otherwise.I don't think Australia has such a serious problem as some people think. That's why the West will turn a blind eye to India's growing nationalist authoritative regime. This is a life or death battle for the US, so they will try to help Modi as much as possible. Expect rising tariffs or bans for products imported from China so that they can boost their industries and to ensure that foreign money wont flow to China
India has a very strong hand to play currently, cant wait to see how much they milk the Americans
Soft power follows hard power. If China wants to increase its soft power then it might have to wait for another 10 years.China does not control the narrative. Soft power is childish game. We don't play it anymore since very long ago.Soft power follows hard power. If China wants to increase its soft power then it might have to wait for another 10 years.
It needs more tier 1 cities, poverty must come down, social welfare expanded, housing costs lowered, more hi-tech companies and innovative products, better governance, reduce corruption even more, pollution must be reduced significantly (very important).
Promote tourism, promote cultural exchanges, significantly increase basic science finding, promote science exchanges and forums.
Increase media collaboration, make policy making more transparent to the public and make mayor, governor, vice ministry appointments more transparent.
That's a long list and from what I see Xi is working on all of them except political transparency, so expect China's soft power to increase in the future
@Petrolicious88 It takes time as the Chinese progresses, open up more and interact their soft power increases. they had the tool, a 5000 years old tool called the Chinese culture. We're living in interesting time as the West invoke the WOKE Culture as a theme of their soft power.China does not control the narrative. And has never been very good with soft power.
