Does it really matter what Singapore thinks regarding China in ASEAN.
In the grand scheme of things, no. But Singapore is still an important economic engine in ASEAN. One of the more active contributors to FDI in poorer SEA nations is Singapore. But I still think the Singapore hate on China is more of a localized issue. Usually its those people in Singapore who have not seen the world enough.
When Singapore is doing FDI outside its borders, they are quite friendly and cooperative with China. For example, Singaporean companies work in close cooperation with Chinese companies like Huawei to build datacenters in Cambodia. I knew a Singaporean business development manager for Phillips in Vientiane. He was developing that market for Phillips appliances. After work, he regularly hangs out with some Chinese guys from Haier involved in the construction of a major hospital there. These Singaporeans are mostly quite friendly to China.
Many Malaysian Chinese call Singaporean Chinese snobbish, and yes there were cases where Singaporeans do discriminate against Malaysians. But when they meet in foreign lands like in Thailand, Laos, etc., they instead become bros, because of cultural familiarity. I guess when Singaporeans have travelled or worked beyond their borders and Malaysia, they become more realistic, and humble. This is the same I think, for other nationalities.
I think its pretty clear that Indonesia will eclipse everyone in ASEAN because of its market size.
China is pretty close with Indonesia right now, maybe Singaporean government is getting jealous or anxious about losing their high status within Asia. Kind of like how Hong Kongers, Taiwanese and the west looked down at mainlanders till the early 2010s.
I am quite hopeful for Indonesia. However, I do caution over-optimism. Indonesia has very promising demographics. But they still suffer from many 3rd world issues such as less-than-optimal work culture, untrustworthiness, still obscene levels of corruption, and despite China's help with infrastructure, are still very backwards in most parts of the nation. Indonesians in general are a little more laid back than their overseas Chinese and Vietnamese counterparts. They just don't work as diligently in general. So progress is gonna be slow. Still, Indonesians are far from the the worse in SEA though. What I do give Indonesia credit, is that they are humble. They mostly know where they are, and are not entitled. They are nothing like the Malaysian Malays, PH proud boys, or the Jai Hinds.
Nevertheless, Indonesia is still the largest, and most important nation in SEA. Its territory is vast, extending from the Eastern Indian Ocean to the South Western Pacific. It is a strategically important nation that China would do very well to befriend. Indonesia and China have friendly relations, and I'm glad for that. I would argue though, that this relationship should to be stepped up even more. If Indonesia could become a bro, like Pakistan, it would give China lots of strategic leverage. Indonesia can open up many alternative sea-lanes for China in case the Malacca Strait is blocked. Indonesia can also act as strategic buffer, sitting right on top of Australia.
