EU announces plan to sanction dead Russians

The European Union intends to continue freezing the assets of blacklisted Russian nationals even if they have died, the bloc announced on Monday as part of the 12th package of sanctions against Moscow.

Brussels first imposed the embargo in 2022, citing the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Headlining the newest round of sanctions is the ban on importing Russian diamonds and certain metals, as well as export of dual-use technologies.

One of the measures, however, included the “possibility to keep deceased persons on the asset freeze list, in order to prevent the freezing measure from potentially being undermined,” according to the European Commission.

Continued sanctions against dead people are a move without precedent, according to the TASS news agency.

The EU also announced it would freeze the assets of more than 140 additional Russian nationals and entities, if any could be found in its territory. Members of the bloc were told to “proactively trace assets of listed persons” to ensure there was no “breach or circumvention” of the embargo.

Should any Russian nationals benefit from the “forced transfer of ownership or control” of EU companies’ subsidiaries in Russia, they too will find themselves sanctioned by the bloc, the European Commission said.

“This will ensure that no one profits from the losses that EU companies face when their subsidiaries are forcibly acquired by Russian owners/management,” according to the body.

Western companies that sold their Russian operations since the embargo began have lost a combined $103 billion and paid at least $1.25 billion in exit taxes to the Russian state, the New York Times reported on Sunday.

❌ US Def Sec Lloyd Austin announces ‘Operation Prosperity Guardian’ to respond to “reckless Houthi attacks” from Yemen in Red Sea.

The group will include the UK, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain.

@DDGeopolitics

Notably, Bahrain is the only arab country they managed to pressure into participating. From the Guardian article I posted yesterday :
Here is my question: what would US do if Houthi managed to overwhelm a Canadian ship and sink it? RCN has serious deficiencies in air defense - only Sea Sparrow and Phalanx. Would US risk a 3-front war for a Canadian ship? This is why I really don't get the Western pundit claim that allies makes US strong. In alliances the stronger nations fear getting backstabbed or dragged into conflict by weaker nations, while weaker nations fear being abandoned.

Amid a crisis in recruitment, the U.S. military has found a new way of convincing a war-weary Generation Z to enlist: thirst traps.

Chief among these attractive young women in uniform posting sexually suggestive content alongside subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) calls to join up is Hailey Lujan. In between the thirst traps and memes, the 21-year-old makes content extolling the fun of Army life to her 731,000 TikTok followers. “Don’t go to college, become a farmer or a soldier instead,” she instructs viewers in a recent video.

"propaganda this propaganda that let me take a propa ganda at them yitties"

Argentina threatens to strip protesters of welfare benefits

Argentinians who participate in road closures will be punished by loss of social benefits, President Javier Milei’s government announced on Monday.

Setting up roadblocks, known as ‘corte de ruta’, has long been the preferred form of protest in the South American country. Milei has sought to outlaw the practice in anticipation of backlash against his “shock therapy” policies for economic and political recovery.

“Protesting is a right, but so is the ability to move freely through Argentine territory to get to work,” Minister of Human Capital Sandra Pettovello said in a video message to the nation, posted by Milei’s office.

Anyone who promotes, instigates, organizes, or participates in roadblocks will lose access to the ministry and could lose their welfare benefits as well, Pettovello said.

The government will audit the organizations that administer welfare benefits to “cut out the middleman” and ensure no one is blackmailed into attending protests by threats to withhold their benefits. Anyone whose benefits are cut because they didn’t attend a protest can call a number to report this to the government.

“The only ones who are not going to get paid are those who go to protests and block the streets,” Pettovello added. “Those who block will not get money.”

To help the most vulnerable members of society, the government will double the Universal Child Allowance and raise the Food Card allotment by 50%, Pettovello said. The government is working hard so that “all citizens can recover their jobs, autonomy and freedom,” she added.

Milei, a self-described “anarcho-capitalist,” was elected on a platform of radical economic and political reforms. In his inaugural address on December 10, he described Argentina as being on the “brink of its deepest crisis in history,” with the previous government leaving a ruinous inheritance of hyperinflation, trade deficit, and debt.

“There is no alternative to a shock adjustment,” Milei said. “There is no money.”

According to the president, Argentina has an annual inflation of 143%, a trade deficit of $43 billion, and $45 billion in debt to the International Monetary Fund alone, with over $10 billion in debt payments due in April. He has proposed devaluing the currency, drastically shrinking the government and cutting regulations, in hopes of spurring private enterprise.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticized Milei’s proposal to adopt the US dollar as Argentina’s currency, noting that this would result in Buenos Aires giving up its sovereignty to Washington.

Really need to up their construction standards especially in earthquake zones. Huge numbers of dead from a relatively smaller earthquake, probably from older buildings.

6.2 is not considered a relatively small earthquake. It's considered a strong earthquake. Hitting a higher populated area can cause a lot of damage. Not to say that the buildings couldn't have been built better but a similar quake hit northern California last year. Tons of buildings collapsed but few deaths due to sparse population.

France is currently reliving its Covid-style economic performance. Macaroni should ban a few more Chinese EVs, I am sure that's going to help
France did several missteps and bungled everything up. First they decided to massively build wind power which had to be backed by gas fired power plants to replace some of their nuclear generation. So they had to become for the first time a major natural gas importer from North Africa and Russia. They became vulnerable to increased gas price shocks. Second, they funded the wind power expansion by heavily taxing their existing nuclear power plants. Third, they deferred nuclear power plant maintenance. Since nuclear power generation was expected to decrease long term with increased use of renewables. This has been happening in France for close to two decades now.

So now the natural gas price was massively jacked up, and their nuclear power plants are unreliable, with a lot of them shutting down all the time due to lack of maintenance. Their power generation park is always on a knife's edge operating close to the limit so it is hard to close down power plants and do long term maintenance. And they have a huge backlog of deferred maintenance. Great job.
