I think Schumer thinks this is his "Only Nixon can go to China" moment. Biden is all words not action hence why Xi isn't calling. If he has something to offer Xi probably someone like Schumer is the only one that can present it. We'll see because yeah if the US is offering the same meaningless stuff, why should Xi even bother? The meeting with Xi probably hinged on what Schumer was telling Wang Yi. Summits like these usually don't happen unless they already know the outcome.

I thought maybe Schumer must have struck a deal earlier or something, but last time Blinken also got to meet with Xi empty handed. Technically Schumer is higher ranking than Blinken, so maybe Schumer also came empty handed just for show.

Bad move IMO. If China already granted their visit, at least have Wang Yi handle them. Xi should only be meeting fellow leaders, not ordinary senators.

I can already tell this will end up in a fiasco.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Monday in Beijing with a delegation of US senators, hours after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer blasted Beijing’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

“I urge you and the Chinese people to stand with the Israeli people and condemn the cowardly and vicious attacks upon them,” Schumer told Xi in the meeting, which he attended with a bipartisan group of US lawmakers. “I say this with respect, but I was disappointed by the foreign minister’s statement showing no sympathy or his support for the Israeli people during these tragedies.”
