I think it isn't a bad idea for Xi to meet the two senators, but Xi must be brutally honest that if they want to something (such as halting all actions against Micron in the Chinese market), the US side should reciprocate (use the word "reciprocity") by allowing CRRC to compete in all future US rail projects (including DC Metro), open its market to Huawei phones and 5G modem, etc. In other words, there must be "reciprocity" in market access and national security concessions.
it is a terrible idea for Xi to ask to meet anyone from the US except Biden, as that breaks diplomatic protocol. he should only meet at the explicit request of others and has the right to refuse.

Oil tankers are not known for their manoeuvrability or speed or great visibility. The fishing boat was moored and stationary.

This incident happened before dawn over a hundred kilometres from Scarborough Shoal, so it’s almost certainly a case of a mere accident in pitch black being spun by the Philippines government as an escalation for more attention seeking nonsense.

Germany’s far-right ‘firewall’ cracks

A vow by mainstream parties not to cooperate with Alternative for Germany is under pressure as the party surges in the polls.
BERLIN — The political maneuver shaking Germany’s postwar democratic order involves a piece of legislation that is about as mundane as it gets.

Center-right legislators in the eastern German state of Thuringia wanted to cut a local property tax by a small amount — and did so with the support of the far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD.
The move broke with years of tradition in which mainstream parties have vowed to maintain a Brandmauer, or firewall, between themselves and the AfD, a party many in a country alert to the legacy of Nazism see as a dire threat to democracy. Even accepting the party’s support, the thinking goes, would legitimize far-right forces or make them salonfähig — socially acceptable.

And so, when parliamentarians from the conservative Christian Democratic Union, or CDU, passed the tax reduction on a late afternoon in September with AfD votes, it sent tremors across the country’s political landscape that still are reverberating.

Historic fears

Germany’s political leaders are all too aware that the Nazi seizure of power began with democratic electoral success. In fact, it was in Thuringia where, in 1930, the Nazi party first took real governing power in coalition with conservative parties.

That may be the only point to come out of this tragedy, and the subsequent attempt to spin it.

Why try to even spin it?

If the Americans fully had Marcos Jr back on this, then no need to spin. The Americans will spin for him.

Since they Philippines are going out of their way to spread this disinformation via the spin, speaks volumes to what they have to do to keep the Americans interested.

They do not realize that when they play politics against the CCP, they are playing politics at the highest levels. Cheap media stuns like this is more or less self-harm.

China will take note, and might make a move.

That other recent story, of how the Filipino diver cut the rope for the Chinese barrier, that was total bs.

But that is the Philippines, they don't know how to play politics at this level. Duterte knew, but not Marcos Jr who had an easy upbringing.

The Americans will say that they already cut the rope to that buoy thingy, no need to escalate more at this time.

Marcos Jr is just a brat, doing bratty things.

Here is the thing, when Collin Coh agreed with H I Sutton in speculating that there could be an accident, I thought it was 20-30% credible
That's concerning...

Good Lord!!! I know China would retaliate in some shape or form after the Filipino Coast Guard cut the rope, but this looks like a whole new level of escalation (cuz lives are now lost instead of a game of chicken). Good God! The ball is the in the US Navy's court now.

This is also concerning. Please read your linked article before writing random nonsense
In an update Wednesday, the coast guard said it would reach out to an oil tanker registered under the flag of the Marshall Islands, which may have been in the area at the time of the incident, based on marine traffic data and witness accounts from the survivors.
Based on information collected by authorities, thetankercame from South Korea and was heading to Singapore, Rear Admiral Armand Balilo told CNN affiliate CNN Philippines in a TV interview.
Such incidents are particularly common in Southeast Asia where crews are often mistreated and under trained, he added, citing the Information Fusion Centre in Singapore which has counted 1,882 individuals as dead or missing at sea in the first half of 2023.

“Sometimes the collisions, even those resulting in death, aren’t reported because there is a lack of trust in the authorities or fear of prosecution for the collision or other activities. This speaks to the overall governance problem,” Bradford said.
