Some Taiwan province news ...

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — New Taipei City Mayor and Prospective Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou You-yi (侯友宜) on Monday (May 8) made his political stances on Taiwan Independence and China's "one country, two systems" formula clear for the first time publicly.

At a session of the New Taipei City Council, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) councilors pressed Hou on his stance on the two cross-strait issues. Hou responded by saying, "I oppose one country, two systems, uphold Taiwan's own democratic values, and move forward," reported CNA.
Hou said that one has a legal basis under the Constitution of the Republic of China, but "Taiwan independence has no legal basis, so I oppose Taiwan independence."

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Minister of National Defense Chiu Kuo-cheng (邱國正) on Monday (May 8) said that the armed forces would not tolerate the destruction of any Taiwanese facility, in response to a suggestion by U.S. Congressman Seth Moulton that the U.S. should warn China that it would "blow up" Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) if it attacked Taiwan.
The defense minister said that the armed forces are responsible for defending Taiwan and its people, materials, and strategic resources. Therefore, "if they want to bomb this or that," the armed forces will not tolerate this kind of situation, Chiu said.

Thai election is in 5 days

Anybody know which parties are pro-China/pro-West?

The Move Forward Party led by Pita Limjaroenat and Pheui Thai Party are pro-West according to my scarce information. I did not care one bit about Thai elections until a few days ago. I also think the younger demographic is anti-PRC because of media funded by the US and their allies. Brian Berletic knows a lot more about Thailand, elections and civil society.

A policeman (R) throws a stone towards Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party activists and supporters of former Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran blocked a road in Karachi during a protest against his arrest. (AFP)

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief, who travelled from Lahore to Islamabad, was arrested after the Rangers broke open the glass window and arrested him after beating lawyers and Khan's security staff.

The arrest of the 70-year-old PTI chairman comes a day after the powerful army accused him of levelling baseless allegations against a senior officer of the spy agency ISI.

Top updates on Imran Khan's arrest:

1. At least one person was reported killed in clashes between protesters and the military in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, with another five people wounded there, while about 15 injuries were reported amid similar violence in Karachi, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Lahore. Police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrations.
2. Pakistan’s telecommunication authority said regulators blocked social media, including Twitter, and internet service was suspended in Islamabad and other cities. Classes at some private schools were cancelled for Wednesday.
3. About 4,000 of Khan’s supporters stormed the official residence of the top regional commander in Lahore, smashing windows and doors, damaging furniture and staging a sit-in as troops there retreated to avoid violence. The protesters also burned police vehicles and blocked key roads.

4. Protesters also smashed the main gate of the Pakistan Army’s headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, where troops exercised restraint. Hundreds of demonstrators shouted pro-Khan slogans as they moved toward the sprawling building.
5. The Islamabad high court summoned top officials and police officers after paramilitary Rangers dramatically arrested Imran Khan in a corruption case from the court premises but reserved its ruling.
6. Fawad Chaudhry, a senior leader of the PTI, denounced the arrest of the 71-year-old former cricket star as “an abduction.” Pakistan’s independent GEO TV broadcast a video of Khan being hauled away.
7. Khan was taken to the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, for questioning at the offices of the National Accountability Bureau, according to police and government officials. He also was to undergo a routine medical checkup, police said.

8. Pakistan interior minister Rana Sanaullah said Khan was arrested for causing a loss to the national treasury in a corruption case. Sanaullah said Imran was arrested by officials of the National Accountability Bureau specifically in the

, adding that there were “dozens” of other cases with corruption inquiries in progress against the former premier.
9. Sources told news agency ANI that Indian defence forces are keeping a close watch on the situation in Pakistan. Strong vigil being maintained by the forces along the Line of Control and the international border, the defence sources reportedly said.
10. Khan told his supporters in a pre-recorded video that he will be "closed inside in an unlawful case" and that he "may not get chance to address them again".
Imran Khan has been arrested. What's next for Pakistan?

If I had to guess, the military probably retains power and Pakistan's decades of political instability continues. There doesn't seem to be enough momentum to overthrow the military establishment.

G-7 to help emerging economies move up supply chains for EVs, solar panels

Partnership with World Bank intended to develop manufacturing, cutting reliance on China

TOKYO -- The Group of Seven rich nations is considering a partnership with the World Bank to build more resilient supply chains for clean-energy technology by providing funding and other support to emerging markets, Nikkei has learned. The G-7 aims to lift these countries beyond resource extraction into the more profitable business of manufacturing products like electric vehicles and solar panels, by helping them secure the needed technology and infrastructure funding.

The G-7 is considering contributing capital to the World Bank for the effort. The hope is to spur more diversified supply chains, reducing the need to rely on China for strategically important products as the global decarbonization push accelerates. The proposal will be made at a meeting of G-7 finance ministers and central bankers in Japan starting Thursday, with the goal of reaching an agreement at next week's leaders summit in Hiroshima. The specifics would be hammered out within the year.

G-7 host Japan has invited outside countries including India and Indonesia to both meetings, where the proposal will be presented as a new avenue to support developing countries, such as resource-rich African nations. Rich nations will provide technical support and training. G-7 finance ministers and central bankers affirmed their intent to "support low- and middle-income countries to play bigger roles in supply chains" at their previous meeting last month in Washington.

I was at the gym yesterday with all the T.Vs blasting the report of Canada expelling the Chinese diplomat for the alleged interference and none of the people there were wee bit interested in discussing that news, most of them were bemoaning the fact that once again their hockey team, the Leafs will not win a championship again.

Yeah, exactly.

If you ask me today, right now, what is more important, that the spook who wrote those anti-China reports at the Canadian Spy Agency come forward to explain and clarify the situation, or should they fire Shanhan and Dubas, et al, clean house, of course we know what is important. They should fire all of them.

If solar panels were easy to build Solyndra wouldn't have gone bankrupt.

They require similar clean, etch and deposition equipment that semiconductors do. They require solar grade wafers, not as strict as prime grade but not exactly something you set up in a shack. You still need a cleanroom.

World Bank? I'm still waiting on the Blue Dot Network, that's the real development program to look out for. Watch out, BRI!
