You don't win a cold war by hoarding regime power at the cost of your overall power. Any move that doesn't gather more comphrensive economic, military or industrial power for your side is a losing move.
The goal was America in, Germany down, Russia out. I consider all three of these goals achieved for the US

That is the whole plan. The US overthrows the government, puts a stooge in place, the stooge makes terrible economic decisions, and then they call the IMF to loan money to cover the shortfall so they can strip mine Pakistani industrial and market assets. Same thing has happened in Ukraine and a zillion other places. Large parts of farmland in Ukraine are now owned by US farming conglomerates.
