Calls in US to punish Saudi Arabia grow louder

Lawmakers have suggested cutting off arms sales after accusing Riyadh of cutting oil output to help Moscow

Calls in US to punish Saudi Arabia grow louder

US Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Ro Khanna have accused Saudi Arabia of “colluding” with Russia in the Ukraine conflict by cutting OPEC oil production quotas, supposedly to boost Moscow’s energy revenue. The two high-profile Democrats called for weapon sales to be cut off to punish Riyadh.

“America shouldn’t be providing such unlimited control of strategic defense systems to an apparent ally of our greatest enemy – nuclear bomb extortionist [Russian President] Vladimir Putin,” Blumenthal, Khanna and Yale business professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld

on Sunday in a Politico op-ed. They added that they will propose Senate and House legislation on Tuesday to immediately halt US arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

On Monday, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez also called on the US government to freeze all aspects of its cooperation with Saudi Arabia. “There simply is no room to play both sides of this conflict,” he said, adding that he “will not green light any cooperation with Riyadh until the Kingdom reassesses its position with respect to the war in Ukraine.”

last week to cut the oil production of member nations by 2 million barrels a day, a move that oil-producing countries attributed to rising interest rates in the West and a slumping global economy. With the US inflation rate near a 40-year high and congressional midterm elections approaching next month, President Joe Biden had urged Saudi Arabia to help push down crude prices.

Blumenthal represents Connecticut and serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, while Khanna is from California and has a seat on the House Armed Services Committee. The lawmakers said some members of Congress had previously proposed halting weapons sales to Riyadh, but those bills didn’t pass. “Due to intense bipartisan blowback to Saudi’s collusion with Russia, we think this time is different,” the op-ed said.

The OPEC production cut was a “pointed blow” to the US, the three authors added, arguing that the oil cartel had never before reduced quotas amid such a tight supply-demand balance in crude markets. “There was no immediate need for Saudi Arabia to reduce supply unless they were seeking to harm the US to the benefit of Russia.”

Three other congressional Democrats – Representatives Sean Casten, Tom Malinowski, and Susan Wild – introduced a House bill late last week calling for the US to withdraw its troops and missile defense systems from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. “Saudi Arabia and the UAE’s drastic cut in oil production, despite President Biden’s overtures to both countries in recent months, is a hostile act against the United States and a clear signal that they have chosen to side with Russia in its war against Ukraine,” the lawmakers said.

Blumenthal and Khanna said the US would rather keep its troops in Saudi Arabia, than let Russia or China fill the void. They argued that the kingdom’s alleged support for Russia “should spark a far-reaching review of the US-Saudi relationship.”

The Californian HSR is literally the biggest facepalm I have ever seen in the HSR world.

By the time the US finally finished their California HSR construction project, I bet China would have completed upgrading most of her HSR network from tracked to maglev.

Man, sometimes I think that the US should just be humble, be polite and ask China nicely for help...
The story of USA today. Building America's 1st bullet train is looking more challenging than the Space Program. Even with all that foreign HSR help. Decades later, still 0 km of HSR and the project price balloons from $33 billion to $113 billion. And on top of that, all the political roadblocks to keep the project from progressing.

But if Ukraine needs $40 billion blank check to fight Russia. It you got it. Instant passing in Congress. The 1st weapons are flown to Ukraine in a matter of weeks. You get the sense what the hell is going on in America.

America won't ask for help from China. Anything that is a matter of national pride. The US won't allow China to take credit.

Speaking about HSR struggles. India is also a contender for comedy.

The obvious question that has arisen now is regarding the huge cost disparity between China’s bullet train on the one hand and India’s on the other. While Thailand would be paying $5.5 billion for 250 km, India will be spending $17 billion for 500 km. This has been described by none other than the Indian Prime Minister as being “almost free”. The ostensible reason given for this is that the Japanese government is financing 81% of the cost of the bullet train project with a Rs. 88,000 crore soft yen loan carrying an interest rate of 0.1%.

The cost of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad HSR project is estimated at $17 billion (Rs 1.1 lakh crore). Based on that, the construction cost of project rail infrastructure works out to $27.44 million per km.

In comparison, the average cost of constructing infrastructure for 350 km per hour bullet trains in China is $17-21 million per km. Even if we take the highest figure of $21 million per km in China for comparison, the cost estimate of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad HSR project is still at least $3.2 billion higher, though comparable to similar infrastructure built in Europe.

When the Mumbai-Ahmedabad project was unveiled by Prime Minsters Narendra Modi and Shinzo Abe in 2017 it was originally hoped that bullet trains would be running in time for the 75th anniversary of Indian independence on August 15 this year, but numerous challenges and delays have pushed completion back to at least 2028.
Arguments over the route and protests by farmers and regional politicians over the loss of agricultural land caused significant delays to land acquisition and route surveys
in Maharashtra state. Echoing similar anti-high-speed rail sentiment in other countries, most notably the UK, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray questioned the benefit of the scheme and dismissed it as a "white elephant."
By September 2021, just 30% of the required land in Maharashtra had been acquired, compared to 97% in Gujarat and 100% elsewhere.

India too cannot allow China to be part of India's national pride projects. India would rather pay rates comparable to Europe to build its HSR. What about those the red tapes and legal roadblocks in India that is standing in the way of their HSR project? Who knows what their final costing would look like. LOL!

The US to finally turn onto its favourite 'oil valve', Saudi Arabia? If America really goes ahead and makes an enemy of Saudi Arabia. What happens then to the Petro-dollar? Would Biden allow the Petro-dollar to be threatened by a bunch of neocons and an American JH? Ready the popcorns!
