This could be somewhat more concerning than what the article headline is saying. Pelosi is not going to Taiwan alone. She has invited democrats and republicans to join her along the visit. Those joining with her will go to Taiwan because they won’t disobey a high ranking and influential politican. Maybe this is more Neocon than Mid terms politics.

Sources familiar with the speaker's plans say she is planning to visit in the coming weeks as part of a broader trip to Asia and has invited both Democrats and Republicans to accompany her. If she goes, she would be the first House speaker to visit in a quarter century.

If it goes through then there will be a major breakdown in relations and a big escalation in tension. It would be a huge scandal if the US military does not escort the jet carrying multiple congress members to Taipei. Likewise it would be a huge humiliation if China does not intercept them and allow US jets to fly across the skies of Taipei unopposed.

You think that is going to work? Unlike the last time, this planned visit has picked up a lot of attention in the media. The BBC are reporting China's threat of military action. Even Republicans have taken up Pelosi's cause and are egging her on to go.

It would seem awfully convinient for it to be cancelled for COVID again, it would be called out as a lie. What if it got out that Tsai was faking it? It would lead to trust issues as well as looking weak.

It would probably be better to just say you don't want WW3 and drop it, like the Ukrainian mig transfer.

Rubio, a Florida Republican, introduced a bill Tuesday along with fellow Republicans Rick Scott, also of Florida, and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota that would impose penalties on any entity insuring or registering tankers shipping oil or liquefied natural gas to China from Russia, according to Rubio’s office.

By buying Russian energy, China is supporting that country’s war in Ukraine, according to Rubio. “Any entity, including Chinese state-run companies, helping them in that effort should face serious consequences,” he said in a statement.

Unless the West is suicidal then they aren’t. We all know China isn’t going to listen to the sanctions but the markets will. Can the EU survive if energy prices spike by another couple triple digits? Likewise, the US voter base.

Commercial? I doubt an American politician would subject themselves to the hoi polloi for that long.

You could probably pick up which one she's on from security arrangements. Intercept over Taiwan and escort to an airport on the mainland. Even if it turns out she wasn't on the plane it wouldn't really matter in the scheme of things, allow the plane to continue on and wait for the next one. Americans have intercepted commerical planes over foreign airspace on the mistaken assumption someone they wanted was on them.

This is all hypothetical and there is 0.001% chance of Pelosi actually doing this. This is just another attempt for the Democrats to look tough that's backfired.
