The G20 foreign ministers refused a joint photo shoot because of Lavrov

Joint photo session of G20 foreign ministers in Bali canceled due to Lavrov.

The traditional ceremony of photographing the participants of the G20 ministerial meeting, which is taking place in Bali, “was postponed” due to the unwillingness of the US and several other foreign ministers to take part in it in the presence of Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov. This is reported by the Japanese news agency Kyodo.

“The G20 foreign ministers in Bali have postponed their traditional group photo session. It is believed that the US and other countries avoided filming with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. According to the publication, this could be due to the position of some participants in the meeting on Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, including US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

At the same meeting, Blinken did not take pictures with Lavrov, CNN reported. The US Secretary of State also avoided group photos, which could include the Russian Foreign Ministry. Later, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi did not participate in the official dinner at the G20 summit due to fears that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov might be present.

Refusal of the G7 foreign ministers to attend the gala dinner

The Foreign Ministers of the G7 (G7) countries refused to attend a gala dinner as part of the G20 meeting in Bali. According to the head of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Retno Marsudi, the host country was informed of this in advance, the dinner was “informal and optional”.

Earlier it was learned that Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi refused to attend and did not attend the official dinner of the foreign ministers of the G20 member countries due to the probability that his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, would attend the meeting.

On July 7, the representative of the EU Foreign Service, Nabila Massrali, said that if Russia participates in the G20 forum in Indonesia, the credibility of this organization and its authority by the European Commission (EC) may be lost. According to her, Russia’s participation in the G20 “may call into question the effectiveness of the forum and its authority.”

Lavrov’s words on the results of participation in the meeting of the G20 foreign ministers, commenting on the information that Blinken will avoid appearing at group photo sessions.

“Yesterday there was a reception hosted by the Indonesians, a welcome reception with a concert, they (the G7 countries) did not come there. This is their understanding of the protocol, and simply courtesy and ethics,” the minister Sergey Lavrov added.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made a number of bilateral contacts during the official dinner of G20 top diplomats in Indonesia, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told TASS on Thursday.

"During the dinner, Lavrov made quite a few bilateral contacts and did not notice the absence of those who boycotted [it], as it turned out," the diplomat said replying to a request to comment on information that G7 ministers refused to attend the dinner over the presence of the Russian top diplomat.
