They are probably thinking "it's so unfair, sanctions should have only hurt Russia and Russia had no right to answer back!" - it's their typical modus operandi. For an average person, it sounds obviously super hypocritical but westerners have been conditioned to think that it is normal. Remember how angry they got when China sanctioned the EU back?

The US needs slippery slopes and boogeymen to scare the population into compliance. They know it works because women in the US value more looking like they have the best lives of all women in the world. That's why you hear nothing from white feminists when American men see Asian women as sexual possessions. They want to believe it's cultural to Asian women to be only sexual servants therefore of lower status to them to give them an excuse to do nothing. But of course they'll open their mouths interpreting Asian men as sexist for it because it again is about making Westerners feel superior not defending women.
