If you actually read Zelensky's direct quotation, it's way more vague, tame, and neutral.

Western troll: What advice you have for Taiwan who face coercion and threat of invasion from larger neighbor??

Zelensky's response:
  • No one benefits from [war], apart from certain political leaders who are not content with the present level of their ambitions. Therefore, they keep growing their appetites, their ambitions......... The world enables these leaders to grow their appetites for now, therefore we need a diplomatic resolution to support countries that are in need of help......We must not leave them behind at the mercy of another country which is more powerful in financial terms, in territorial terms and in terms of equipment........nd therefore, if there is a way out diplomatically, we need to use the diplomatic way. But it must be a preemptive way, not the one that comes after the war has started.”
TLDR: A diplomatic resolution before war starts. The same 'balanced' language that China defacto gives Ukraine war.

And when you realize this is an Opinion piece in WaPo by a pro-Taiwan Westerner, you can see why it's twisted/exaggerated to make a big stink over nothing.
Basically, by answering this question Zelensky is accepting the question's premises, that is Taiwan is a "country". Since you referred the questioner as a troll, you should know that you fall in to the trap if you continue answering the question without first refute the premises.

Either Zelensky is stupid to fall into the trap, or he sincerely regarded Taiwan as a "country".

Remember, whenever someone asks question comparing Taiwan with Ukraine, China's official position always begin with "These two are totally incomparable" before going any further.

Comparing China's position with Zelensky, Zelensky is NOT as "balanced" as China is. China's "balance" is to avoid answering such trapping question, Zelensky does not.

I won't read too much into what Zelensky said in the interview, but he is not as "neutral" as you are trying to interpret.

I didn't even read Josj Rogin, just by reading Eleinsky's original comment it is obvious he is calling for support for Taiwan against China no matter how we mince word or how he didn't mention Taiwan or China by name...

Again, Elensky's stance(or rather the non-existence of it) does not matter
Agreed with your points but what's up on calling Zelensky, Elensky?

I have a question about what Zelensky said that some smart person might volunteer an answer for: who cares?
It's more an exercise of calling out how Western journalists exaggerates and stretches a tiny grain of truth to elicit faux outrage and push an pro-Taiwan agenda, than anything intrinsically important about what Zelensky actually says, since Zelensky says whatever benefits him at the moment.

Many people don't even read beyond the headlines, it's so disingenuous how Western journalists twist and manipulate people's comments out of context for a pro-Taiwan agenda.

The letter "Z" is banned from Ukraine.
Banned in Ukraine but we're not in Ukraine and none of us are Ukrainians, besides after that person's speech at the recently held ISS Shangri-la defense bla bla I could give a flying f what he demands. He's in no position to demand on anything or anyone, let alone to China. Zelensky is who he is and it shall remain so.
