Yea but John Cena doesn't win Olympic medals for China. If more athletes like Eileen Gu win medals for China then she won't be as special.
In my opinion, the medals aspect played only a small part in the motivation behind the reaction. The way Chinese social media reacted to her was insane. It was as if Mao came back to life and beat the s**t out of Biden. They viewed her entry into the Chinese team like an arrival of a hero who is going to slay a dragon and like a middle finger to the US.

Would it have been that hard for these bozos to call back HQ and ask for the river guards, or whatever, to take care of the situation?
They were just spectating as the guy drowned. I doubt there isn't police with boats somewhere around that river.
Really callous behaviour.
I doubt a boat would have made it there before he drowned.

Standing around and telling the guy they aren't going to jump in is strange. I assume it was because they were panicking and didn't know what to do. The best thing would have been to find something like a rope or pole he could have held onto. American cops aren't the smartest group of people.

Oh well, at least they didn't shoot him.

Anyone remember this back in late April? About the West wanting to dictate Russian oil prices. Looks like they are seriously considering that. New article from today.

They want the ability to dictate the price of Russian energy to help tame inflation and a global recession lol.

Russia should just cut the energy to Europe and let them implode in triple digit inflation.

Didn't I keep reading about Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states are the ones who keep raising oil prices, the last one being a couple of days ago.

Good luck stop buying from Russia and get them "cheap" from Saudi Arabia instead.

Saudi Arabia Raises Oil Prices Again

  • Saudi Aramco raised Arab Light OSPs to Asia.
  • Arab Light will be more expensive for the European market as well.
  • Prices could go even higher if Asian demand remains robust.

That's one I don't blame them for. You need to be a competent swimmer to rescue a grown man. Plenty of would be rescuers have been pulled down with the person who is drowning.

There should be some sort of life preserver there for these sorts of situations.

That is what I have been told.

Anyone in trouble in a swimming pool, and they look like they are drowning, do not jump in to save them.

Throw them the buoy, or use that stick to help them.

Never jump into the water to save them.

The drowning person is in a life and death struggle and could be in a complete panic.

They just want to grab onto anything. To grab onto another human, means both of them going to sink.

She is propagandized by Chinese officials for a political reason, maybe you missed the value. There were a lot of heartfelt stories about diaspora returning to China (i.e., Chinese hockey team) to compete for the Olympics, Eileen was merely the poster child of that campaign. For economic/demographic reasons, China will have to allow and encourage (preferably skilled) Chinese diaspora back to the homeland.

To overseas Chinese and descendants/diaspora, it is a signal that China welcomes Chinese people back.

To domestic Chinese, this campaign is meant to change the domestic opinion in favour of more immigration of returning Chinese Diaspora.

It is my hope that China's official policy would also change to be more tolerant of dual citizenship to accompany the inevitable Chinese diaspora return policies.

Those points sound like guessing to be honest, and your hope, along with the drastic difference between your initial point and your new points, basically confirmed that. China has always been friendly with their diasporas for several decades, so that has never been an issue to begin with. They did a lot of community outreach events with those diasporas, even the ones in the US. Its absolutely BS that you insinuate the CPC was never caring about them. However, (I'm going to get crucified for saying this) many of the diasporas have distanced themselves from China due to their views of the CPC (玻璃心 anyone?). So no, I don't buy that at all.
