It's quite good timing and genius move really. If Australia make a big deal out of it and try for coloured revolution or even intervention then the world is left asking "so how is Scott any different from Putin?"

Just 24 hours before the deal was signed Americans said they are sending over Kurt Campbell and their Assistant Secretary of State over there to sort this out. So this deal also managed to make the Americans distrust Australia in its ability to play deputy sheriff in its part of the world. And despite that announcement the deal still went ahead.

If Labor takes over as the government in next month's Australian election I will laugh.

Labor is likely to win in the next election in 1 month time

Their strategy would have never worked

lets say theoretically there are 4 islands to contest.

China offers 5 dollars for one to switch sides

Australia must offer 24$

China offers 7$

Australia must offer 32$

The conclusion was inevitable.
It's not actually about money, AFAIK China isn't offering more money than Australia. It's about respect. Australia does this:

This comment thread by Australians perfectly summarizes SI’s feeling. Just look at how condescending and racist they are. They yap about ’debt trap’ and when an African user comments the opposite of that, he gets the classic Western lecture on how he is wrong and then calling Africans ‘dumb‘ and ‘indoctrinated’

That sort of cavalier and condescending behavior should not be practiced by us Chinese as well. We do not want to be seen as the new 'ugly American'. So whether we are in their countries or on the internet, we should be mindful of our choice of words.

Oof, the Solomons Islands deal is sure causing a reaction, the Australians are hyperventilating.

Some of those comments are pretty based:

"“It gives China the ability to shape the region on their terms. The aim of our strategy is to shape it on our terms – this agreement certainly doesn’t do that.”"

There is no Solomon inside. No notion of Solomon being a nation state.

Western oil majors are fleeing Russia. Having bankrolled Moscow’s bellicose expansionism for years, Big Oil has finally taken the moral high ground. A fire sale of meaty assets looms, creating a golden opportunity for state-owned Chinese enterprises. Sanctions and divestments look set to trigger a great transfer of wealth from Western capital holdings to the People’s Republic of China.
Russia’s newfound membership of the global pariah club points towards greater Chinese control over Russian resources. Since there are no obvious buyers for the many investments now being jettisoned by Western IOCs, this clears the way for the likes of CNPC, CNOOC and Sinopec to grab a bargain.
The value of the Russian hydrocarbon licences, projects and infrastructure being written off probably span to tens of billions of dollars, if not hundreds. These could feasibly change hands for a single renminbi. China is already a huge investor in Russia and its state-owned champions would surely welcome the opportunity to expand their footprint for next to nothing.
