I agree that Blinken is an idiot. The MiG-29 saga is just another pathetic example of this. We came this close to WW3 for reals. Had he bothered to speak with the DoD before opening his mouth I doubt that little charade would have happened. Where does the US government even get these people?
I doubt Blinken made that statement without agreement from Biden and the rest of the administration. US officials don't announce policy unilaterally, especially on a very sensitive topic like this.
Here's what I am sure happened.
1. At the start of the war officials think of the MiG transfer idea. Most of Ukraine's airforce infrastructure is still intact and their pilots are still alive.
2. America agrees to do it, Russia responds that if they do, it will basically be the start of full nuclear war. Nuclear alert is set to the highest level. Putin's address address specifically mentions the the possibility of nuclear war. Nothing from Biden.
3. At the last hour, Biden backs down. The nuclear threat descalates.
4. Polish officials spend the next week badgering the Americans to let them supply migs and start WW3.
5. Sick of hearing Polish warmongering, the Americans come up with the idea that Poland can supply whatever they want, but they will be on their own, i.e. Russia will attack them straight away, probably with nukes. They probably ran it by the Russians too who would be happy to oblige. At this point I doubt the Ukraine has the infrastructure to support anything more than one or two jets.
6. Poland who realise what has happened, still want to drag Americans in the war. They then run with the dumb idea to transfer them to American custody before transferring them to the Ukrainians.
7. The Americans get embarrassed and is forced to publically can the idea a second time. NATO looks more divided than ever before. Well done to undermine an alliance you depend upon for survival, Poland.
