Got more respect for them if they persisted with their stance. Now they are just weaselling their way out of a bad situation of their own doing and trying to have the cake and eating it.
And you just know China will instantly reciprocate and drop the sanctions when Lithuania relents. They always do this, e.g. releasing the 2 Michaels the instant Meng was released. China is too merciful imo. China would have been justified to arrest and execute 100 Canadians for the brazen state kidnapping of Meng; you know if that had happened to the US the responsible country would have had the crap droned out of it.

My respect for the CPC will instantly go up another 10% if they DON'T drop the sanctions against Lithuania this time.

In the End, You’re Treated Like a Spy,’ Says M.I.T. Scientist

Gang Chen was arrested a year ago on charges of hiding his links to China. The charges were dismissed, but he said the damage — to him, and to American science — has lingered.

"You work hard, you have good output, you build a reputation,” Dr. Chen said, in a three-and-a-half-hour interview at his M.I.T. office, the first he has given about the case. “The government gets what they want, right? But in the end, you’re treated like a spy. That just breaks your heart. It breaks your confidence

Right? The way US/EU with the audacity to economically sanction a 26M province of a Unified China, and China puts on kiddy gloves with a 3M member state of a not-even-unified EU. The power dynamics is out of whack, China should make an example out of this smug-ass dinky European state.

The idea of sanction isn't to meet out punishment because you're angry (or at least, that's not the primary reason), the purpose is to change behaviour. This means the sanction have to be highly focused and just the right amount of pressure applied.

Do you see sanctions by the US change behaviour of China, Russia, Iran, North Korea or Cuba? If not then these sanctions have already failed their primary purpose. On the other hand it seems China's sanction is working and Lithuania is on the edge of flipping on the issue.

Continue to apply sanction after you've reached your goal because you're vindictive is not really a good strategy, it means your sanction weapon in the future is less effective at changing behaviour since the party on the receiving end will think "he's known to keep on sanction after getting what he wants, so why bother giving it to him".

Same sort of logic why PLA treats PoWs well instead of abusing them like Imperial Japanese Army. It makes it that much more likely that people will surrender in the future.
