The Squid Game is directly derived from western dystopian fiction such as Stephen King's the Long Walk. It reflects an anxiety toward the excesses of Capitalism that resonates in both SK and US.

When a Chinese show depicts a young couple's romance difficulties due to financial problems, or when a show follows the characters from the Cultural Revolution to the Economic Reform, most Chinese audiences will recognize a part of their life in the story. This is not something that will resonate with audiences from other countries.
