Regarding Peng, whatever if her accusation is true or false, lock her up for aiding the enemy. This is clearly a western instigated propaganda attack. Maybe it was from her stupidity, but in the end, her idiotic actions have clearly led to this situation.
As for the accused former Vice Premier, investigate the facts, and if true, lock him up as well. No one is bigger than the country

The Chinese screwed up on this one. To be honest, it isn’t hard to respond. Based on the info that I got, Peng Shuai never reported this supposed sexual assault (nor did it sound like one) to the authorities nor hired a lawyer to represent her. In that case, she, along with any media outlet that reported this as sexual assault, are slandering Zhang Gaoli, who can sue them (assuming China has this legal mechanism). The Chinese could have used that as way to reason that the WTA is either deliberately or unknowingly undermining the law system within China and that Peng Shuai needs to follow the standard protocol.
Instead, they acted like a dog and used videos to show that she is ok. The Chinese media and government’s public relations personal are, generally speaking, s**t at situations like these.
How will China penetrate and disseminate this information in the world when the west has a very big majority control of the information sphere. It will take like multiple tiktok like social media network successes to even make a dent in western control of the information sphere. Or China needs to covertly finance oligarchs to take over mainstream media networks don't expect this to happen anytime soon.
The Chinese have to word it correctly to breach through the Western media's smoke and mirrors, aka use harsh language, not that soft "win-win" stuff. Xi's "broken heads and bloodshed" quote, Yang Jiechi's attack upon Blinken, and Zhao Lijian's Covid claims and barrage against Aussie SF's war crimes are some examples of the Chinese breaching through that wall.
The PR department is so bad that they should be investigated for corruption/treason. In my imaginary mind, they are recruiting/consulting bottom of the barrel ex-pats in China. Like people that have very low respect in official capacity in the west or maybe literal real life trolls.
