Given how much Australia has been trying so hard to become the most faithful vassal of the United States, I wonder if that would even be necessary. Seems like they can't wait to tie its fate to that of the US and to even go down with them.

On that one thing, I do agree. None of these 5eye nations deserve to lead anyone, might as well get China to actually take control because at least a vision will be had and a direction will be set but the last 20 years in australia has been a nightmare with all these stupid pro west propaganda going on and on without any objectivity whatsoever
Some serious stuff is going down if they are resorting to using these people to negotiate with Russia rather then any other minister because as of now, the current officials in the USA are literally pushing the USA down the path of war on three different fronts. This is literally a scenario that the USA would want to avoid due to the sheer amount of resources required to fight wars on three separate fronts with three separate nations that all have very good reasons to hate the USA and would much prefer the USA to bugger off.
Reminds me of 2018 when Trump was losing patience with Rex Tillerson and the State Department, so he sends Pompeo... his CIA Director at the time.... to meet with Kim Jung-un in Pyongyang. Tillerson shortly gets the boot, and Pompeo is promptly elevated to Secretary of State.
Looking at William Burns's résumé and quite frankly he's WAY more experienced and better qualified to be the country's head diplomat than the amateur that is Anthony Blinken, who might I add has yet to deliver any sort of significant foreign policy win for the Administration... if anything Blinken seems to make everything worse. The circumstances between Tillerson/Pompeo and Blinken/Burns are so alike, it makes me wonder if the Biden Administration is losing patience and is signalling its intent to chuck Blinken aside.
Pompeo was actually even worse IMHO because he was an actual racist who appeared to enjoy bullying and harassing Chinese- every day he'd deliver some new injunction against Chinese scientists and sanctions and he'd deliver it with a relish. The way he'd dog whistle "Chinese Communist Party" to really express his desired epithet "chink" really revealed a lot about him.
That is until, the "Chinese Communist Party" torpedoed all of his political ambitions and the future of his family. Within a generation, the Pompeo's will be going back to whatever peasant shithole state they were in before sucking up to trump.
