And what kind of "special contributions" can Taiwan bring exactly to the table that China a size that dwarfs that of strawberry island could not? Pineapples? Is America really this desperate to test China's resolve and see if it will put up a fight for Taiwan?

The current U.S. foreign policy is delusional. Its attempts to command the world are getting laughed at. How did this happen and what might change it?

Here are excerpts from two smart essays which discuss the theme.

Alastair Crooke asks why somehow nothing seems to be working within Joe Biden's United States. He then

Prof. Michael Brenner recently send a longer diagnose of the U.S. political sphere to his mailing list. He sees the same foreign policy problems as Crooke does and tries to answer some of the questions Crooke is asking:

Alastair Crooke closes his essay with a rather hopeful view:

That crack in U.S. structures however may become a very dangerous moment for Russia and China. Professor Brenner thinks that only the threat of a potentially very violent scenario can cause the 'structural crack' that brings things the U.S. back to sanity:
Myself and no doubt many Chinese people well versed in Chinese history recognises this behaviour well: this is the exact same behaviour exhibited by the Qing ruling class during their decline. For example of this I point you to Treaty of Nanjing, signed 1843 in the aftermath of the First Opium War:

二、自今以后,大皇帝恩准英国人民带同所属家眷,寄居大清沿海之广州、福州、厦门、宁波、上海等五处港口,贸易通商无碍;且大英国君主派设领事、管事等官住该五处城邑,专理商贾事宜,与各该地方官公文往来;令英人按照下条开叙之列,清楚交纳货税、钞饷等费。

ARTICLE II.
His Majesty the Emperor of China agrees that British Subjects, with their families and establishments, shall be allowed to reside, for the purpose of carrying on their Mercantile pursuits, without molestation or restraint at the Cities and Towns of Canton, Amoy, Foochow-fu, Ningpo, and Shanghai, and Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, etc., will appoint Superintendents or Consular Officers, to reside at each of the above-named Cities or Towns, to be the medium of communication between the Chinese Authorities and the said Merchants, and to see that the just Duties and other Dues of the Chinese Government is hereafter provided for, are duly discharged by Her Britannic Majesty's Subjects.
Oh, you poor sods who have travelled across the sea. The Emperor in his infinite mercy has ALLOWED you to live in five of our cities, better kowtow to show your gratitude

三、因大英商船远路涉洋,往往有损坏须修补者,自应给予沿海一处,以便修船及存守所用物料。今大皇帝准将香港一岛给予大英国君主暨嗣后世袭主位者常远据守主掌,任便立法治理。

ARTICLE III.
It being obviously necessary and desirable, that British Subjects should have some Port whereat they may careen and refit their Ships, when required, and keep Stores for that purpose, His Majesty the Emperor of China cedes to Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, etc., the Island of Hongkong, to be possessed in perpetuity by Her Britannic Majesty, Her Heirs and Successors, and to be governed by such Laws and Regulations as Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, etc., shall see fit to direct.
Notice how here the Chinese translation has a very different tone to the English, in case any Qing subjects want to read it and not feel to bad. The English says "cedes" but the Chinese is more like "gifts". The Emperor see that you English coming from the other side of the world arrive at our shores with your ship all battered and messed up, so he see it as reasonable that you have a place to store all your ship repairing gear and material. That little bit of land call Hong Kong? Pft that's nothing to to the Emperor, you can have it.

If you didn't know the history behind this document you would think maybe the British and Chinese had a war and the Chinese won.

In a full 3 hour loop through the port complex, passing every single terminal, we saw less than a dozen containers get unloaded.
Whelp, that's fucked. To put this into pespective Yantian Port in Shenzhen can load/unload about 45 containers per hour. That's ten times the rate of Long Beach. No wonder all the containers are stuck in the US.

us prepared in sacrificing a pawn to gain some leverage?
My gut feeling is the us might actually want China to invade taiwan now and they will just sit back and watch, they just want China to suffer some military losses in taking taiwan thus slowing down China economy and military modernization
but the CCP can see this a mile away and will only fight on China own schedule not americans

For reference this reactor generates the same amount of electric power as the A1B reactor used in the Ford class carrier.

Installation of containment starts at Chinese SMR

25 October 2021

The steel containment vessel bottom head has been installed for the ACP100 small modular reactor (SMR) demonstration project at the Changjiang nuclear power plant on China's island province of Hainan. China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) said the milestone lays a solid foundation for the subsequent construction of the main structure of what it says will be the world's first land-based commercial SMR.

Construction of the multi-purpose 125 MWe pressurised water reactor (PWR) - also referred to as the Linglong One - officially started on 13 July following final approval for its construction by China's National Development and Reform Commission in early June.
The containment vessel bottom head - which will support the steel containment shell - was assembled on-site from 50 pre-fabricated steel plates. The assembled component was yesterday hoisted into place by crane onto the plant's concrete foundation plate.

Once completed, the Changjiang ACP100 reactor will be capable of producing 1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to meet the needs of 526,000 households, CNNC said. The reactor is designed for electricity production, heating, steam production or seawater desalination.

CNNC announced in July 2019 the launch of a project to construct an ACP100 reactor at Changjiang. The site is already home to two operating CNP600 PWRs, while the construction of the first of two Hualong One units began in March this year. Both those units are due to enter commercial operation by the end of 2026.

Under development since 2010, the ACP100 integrated PWR's preliminary design was completed in 2014. The major components of its primary coolant circuit are installed within the reactor pressure vessel. In 2016, the design became the first SMR to pass a safety review by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The preliminary safety analysis report for a single unit Changjiang demonstration plant was approved in April 2020.

The project at Changjiang involves a joint venture of three main companies: CNNC subsidiary China National Nuclear Power as owner and operator; the Nuclear Power Institute of China (NPIC) as the reactor designer; and China Nuclear Power Engineering Group being responsible for plant construction. Construction time is expected to be 58 months. For the demonstration plant, the reactor vessel is being supplied by Shanghai Boiler Works Limited, the steam generators by a CNNC subsidiary and other reactor internals by Dongfang Electric Corporation.

In October 2015, NPIC signed an agreement with UK-based Lloyd's Register to support the development of a floating nuclear power plant using the ACP100S variant of the CNNC design, a marine version of the ACP100. Following approval as part of the 13th Five-Year Plan for innovative energy technologies, CNNC signed an agreement in July 2016 with China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation to prepare for building its ACP100S demonstration floating nuclear plant.

What benefit would a Taiwan membership confer on them? On the other hand, they can expect China to extract a pound of flesh from them instead.
Taiwan's participation/admittance to UN signifies independence. Non-support of Taiwan's participation is useful leverage for other nations when they need to negotiate any agreements with China. It's the classic Taiwan card. Besides, it's not the first time PRC has paid for countries to maintain one-china policy. Some African nations even brazenly asked and received money for not recognizing Taiwan.

According to Jing can rong (金灿荣), influential Chinese IR expert, China pays 300 billion RMB every year for other countries' non recognition of Taiwan. This is from his official youtube channel

Unfortunately, the talk is in Mandarin. The relevant part starts at 7:45 where he talks about the economical cost of not getting Taiwan back.

For members that understand Mandarin, the entire video is pretty useful as it lists ten benefits of Taiwan's return across from many areas including ideology, scientific development, geopolitics, military and economy.
