IMO only the Obama administration was less idiotic where they tried to innovate in their diplomacy with TPP. Since then, it has been disaster after disaster.
Inflation is already very high but it is not reflected in official data due to to the lagging effect of rental renewal. Expect that effect to be officially shown in one year
I think that this new development is just another move by the US to pressure China. It is unlikely that the US will start Trade War 2.
However I see more verbal support from its allies... The rest of the world will act as the fisherman watching a good fight from afar and picking benefits along the way (ie. Vietnam)
Just hike the rmb by 5%, and destabilize the already wobbly US economy.
Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, India...even Russia hope for a major conflict between China and the United States, and they can become vultures that eat corpses of two superpower. But China and the United States are not stupid.
Raising RMB by 5% effective immediately will hurt Chinese exporters already committed to being paid in USD.
You have to start hiking it at some point, preferably over many months. The rmb had increased by 5% during the second half of 2020. But it has not moved much since then. The goal is 5% per year for the next 10 yrs.
Chinese consumers/producers will enjoy lower raw material import prices, as the rmb increases in value.
