(1) The Tiananmen protest was not a pro-democracy movement. While analyzing the esric data, I found something very interesting and unexpected. Public dissatisfaction with inflation, unemployment, social morale, and government inefficiency skyrocketed during the peak of the urban protests in spring 1989, but the majority of urban residents in October 1988 (54 percent) thought that market reform was going “too fast,” and such “anti-reform” attitudes closely echoed the rise of inflation during the same time. In the meantime, public demand for liberal democratic ideas such as freedom of speech and freedom of the press never surpassed 33 percent, even in May 1989.
This is one of the most recent academic findings or research done on the Tianmen incident. I don't know why @Mr T keeps harping on this issue but not only that audaciously insisting that your version of Truth is the one objective fact and the rest are just simply CPC revisionist history. Why are people like you, western leaning Libs, have this God complex that everyone in the world must believe and think of the world or issues the way you lads do? The more you push China to become like the west, the more it'll resist. And if there are unsatisfied Chinese western loving Libs, no one is stopping them from moving to whichever western countries they wish to go ans settle. The only they can't do and the overwhelming majority of Chinese people won't stand for is the idea that China become like India - a country that's a mess both politically, economically, and culturally.
