If regime change of Venezuela has been decided. I think, that:
1. US intelligence agencies have assets/moles that Maduro is NOT aware off.
2. Opposition has be purchased behind the scene already.
3. Air/missile strikes will target Maduro, killing him and important associates.
4. Opposition will be moved to take over with possible "threatening communication" from US to the defence forces of Venezuela who will be jointly told (Maduro's Opposition + US ) that forget Maduro, move on to a new era of US led so called "freedom, democracy and prosperity".
Its much more than "heavy crude oil". Its about gain yet another military led foothold on one of worlds most resources rich continents and then one by one doing regime changes and expansion wherever possible. Off course due to increasing decoupling US can only hope to survive if at all, if it manages to capture the increasingly rich market of south Americas for its products as they develop over time. It also means losing those markets for others (or joining US to gain access to them ). Plans may be much bigger like this. Time will tell.
5. Its definitely setting up "environmentally dirty" critical rare earth mineral and other industries whether this mineral exists on any single country such as Venezuela or NOT. One can always ship them and poison their environment and use their cheap labour and off course import quite capable technical workforce from various other south American nations.
May be even set up "risky" bio-hazard or future "biological weapons" labs there (like they were in Ukraine etc.) to perfect new gene edited "behavior, physiology enhancing or harming" agents.
6. By using a country so far away from China and most of Asia/Africa, its also about denting Chinese and more generally global south's reputation. No matter how things are interpreted on this forum, if this regime change goes through, It will hurt Chines, Russian and collectively global south's future security guarantees and credibility, even to each other whether they have given previously any to Venezuela or not. Its will still show to the rest of world, US can do as its pleases with no consequences not even the miner ones. Interpretations/re-framing here, will not change what most of world will "unconsciously" think. Despite distrust among themselves, Global south must reach a point where they can prevent regime changes or other influences like this.
South Americas is one of most free regions in the world that have "balls" to oppose any "imperial" or hegemonic design of colonial powers as oppose to say Japan/South Korea etc. . If world does not resist attempts like this and abandons them, it will set a terrible example.
