Pan is one of several Chinese migrants who I first met two years ago. Like many of the group who he travelled with, he now works in a Chinese restaurant, even though back home, he prided himself on his farming know-how.

In America, those skills don't translate, since the soil conditions are different and he doesn't speak English. Past lives hold little currency.

For a while after arriving, Pan wandered from city to city, sleeping on borrowed couches or bunking with fellow migrants. Eventually, he landed in Barstow, California, a dusty industrial town.

His life today is penned within a tight radius. He cooks and sometimes waits tables at a restaurant during the day, video-calls his wife and children in China at night, and repeats the routine the next day. He lives in a room attached to the kitchen.

To outsiders, and even to his family back home, Pan's life might seem unbearably monotonous. But to him, it's defined not by what's lacking, but by what's no longer present. No land seizures. No meddling officials. No fear of arbitrary punishment.

"My family doesn't understand," he said with a half-smile. "They ask why I left a comfortable life behind. But here, even if it's simple, it's mine. It's free."

Pan's sense of freedom is quiet but stubborn. Two years ago, in a cramped hotel room in Quito, Ecuador, he told me on the eve of his journey that even if he died en route, it would be worth it.

He still says the same. "All of this," he repeated, "is worth it."
He literally left his family behind in China so he could live a worse life lmao.

I hope China doesn't take these weirdos back.

A classic case of do nothing and win for China

I mean if you don't want India to buy Russian oil and therefore indirectly contribute to Russian war effort the solution is staring right in your face: just sell American oil to India at whatever price Russians are doing, undercut the Russians.

But no you don't want to do it because you're cheap and/or unable to foot the bill to play at the cold war 2.0 table, so now not only is Ukraine going to lose you're going to end up getting in a trade war with India also. Didn't put your money where your mouth is, now you're going to suffer a case of 赔了夫人又折兵.

Back during the cold war the way it worked is 小弟 have to actually do some work and pay a blood price to earn their united front value and 老大哥 actually paid up that united front value with real things like technology transfer or resources. These days you get these crazy politicians who don't know geopolitics trying to be 小弟 by pretending to do work and others pretending to be 老大哥 without paying anything.

It's hard for me to judge what he has experienced. However, he did one thing better than other illegal immigrants, which was not to bring his family members to suffer unnecessary hardships.
It's hard to say what exactly happened to him. Perhaps he really encountered unfair treatment (perhaps his house was forcibly demolished by "black gloves" during the real estate development boom), or perhaps he was simply dissatisfied with the amount of compensation.
The worst case scenario is that he believes in the utopian "American Dream" fabricated by those pro-Westerners (many of whom have never even traveled abroad).

India is not an US ally, at least not since what is now India was under British rule.

Anyone who believes India to be an American ally is either misinformed, or actively spreading disinformation, as in the case of Nimarata "Nikki" Haley (nee Randhawa):

There's a reason why disloyal Nikki was not offered a role in the second Trump administration.

Depending on how mouthy Haley gets, there's a chance President Trump will direct the FBI and DoJ to dig into her for FARA or Hatch Act violations, or maybe something else altogether. ;)

Pretty sure most software developers in the U.S. consider India the adversary Nikki…

I've only been flying Airbus ever since the first Boeing crash made headlines years ago. It's probably only a matter of time before Airbus uses Indian software too though.
