According to anecdotes, parents in China are afraid of the sport schools for being academically garbage and not preparing children for any life outside the sport.
maybe the sports schools are the problem, should be a strong collegiate sports programs in the normal universities as well as support for sports throughout the age brackets.

I find that hard to believe. When you have issues with multiple team sports, there is clearly a talent evaluation/development problem.

Zack Edey is a 7-5 Chinese-Canadian that just made the NBA all-rookie team (he is half white, but his Chinese mother was a good basketball player in high school and herself is 6-3). The Chinese population in Canada is maybe a bit over 1 million at best. You're telling me that 1 billion people can't make at least one regular NBA player in the last decade and a half?

EDIT:
One more point, taking the US as an example. They hand out athletic scholarships like candy. Even if you don't make it into the professional leagues, you can at least go to a decent school, even a top academic school.
China could check by replacing all players in the football (and basketball maybe) team with guys of African descent. I mean European and Middle eastern teams do this anyway so it's not new. If still no result, then we can see it's not a genetic problem and instead the entire system has terminal cancer and needs to be put out of its misery.

Too bad China could never perform such experiments to find the root cause.

I know this belongs in the sports thread but I will post the short version here while the more detailed version is in the sports thread. China played Indonesia in football today and lost 0-1. That means they are out of qualifying for the world cup next year.

Just fugging frustrating to watch. Can solve semiconductor and Ai but completely lost on how to develop a system to have a semi competent football team.
Sounds like a major technological breakthrough in imminent. The law of equivalent exchange always works its magic between Chinese soccer and technology. Maybe this? Or maybe Elon moving SpaceX to China?

Chinese football’s problem is primarily twofold. Firstly, as you already identified, there is a massive talent selection problem where parents don’t dare bet their children’s future on sports and prefer academic excellence overwhelmingly over sports. So the Chinese Messi is never going to realise his football potential in that environment as his parents and school system will have been focus on his studies and have no time for his football.

The second more fundamental issue is that Chinese football is just too lucrative no matter how shit they are. It’s the only major field in China that is allowed to be too big to fail where money pours in no matter the results. So there is no real incentive to change as there is no real serious punishment for failure.

These two problems compound each other in that even if the Chinese messi is found by scouts and put into a training program, his potential will be limited by the sea of mediocrity around him. He won’t ever get to meet his own full potential because he is already king of the tiny Chinese football hill at 1% of his power.

But in a way, I think it’s actually a good thing that the national football team is so consistently terrible. It keeps the Chinese people humble and grounded, else if China is too successful in every field, it’s almost inevitable that people will start getting ‘gods chosen race’ delusions and start dragging China down, just like how entitlement and arrogance has sunk the west.

Having one perpetual national embarrassment is a small price to pay to keep the Chinese people forever humble and hungry so we stay sharp and on top.

- Tesla depends on US lefties and urbanites buying their overpriced EVs. Because the environment and climate change.
- SpaceX and its subsidiaries depend on Trump government subsidies.

For some reason Genius Elon has managed to bite the hand of both groups.

Sometimes in life is better just to Shut Up.

Does this mean that China has a snowballs chance of beating US launch capacity this year?
