What would be the economic consequences for Australia if any?
Politicians are very smart people or even cunning. Whatever they do, they've already thought about consequences. It's just about if they can control the consequences or not. I heard that when China block Australian coal, their coal were imported into China via a third country making the price even more expensive for China. I don't know!

I hope China would impose some meaningful punishment on Australia so it feels the hurts and let it know who's the real boss in the region.

发改委 has the power to do things like issue orders saying "China will no longer recognise any degrees or certificates issued by any Australian institutes from XXXX day forward".

Which incidentally many are guess are coming.

If China imposed a ban on recognizing Australian college degrees, then most Chinese would not invest in Australian real estate industry.
I've been hearing about this potential move for quite some time now. I wonder why its not being implemented. It would automatically strike a big blow to Aussie universities, the local businesses that depend on it, real estate and so on.
Maybe China still believes that Morrison would mend his ways. But looks like that's not gonna happen.

You don't drop your big hands at the start of the game, you start with a 3. Playing out your hand too quickly and you end up doing a Trump and now they have no cards left.

It means that all official channel of engagement would be suspended indefinitely. NDRC has a lot of power even though it is not well known. Except iron ore, other things such as education, tourism, gas, and dairy products could be next.

SMH reporting diplomactic channels cut off below minister levels, so I guess above it still open? Good move though, China agave them too many chances to repair ties but they went the other way. At some point enough is enough
