The truth is that global society has become low trust everywhere and these are historical times. Even China has become a low trust society again.
The republicans are clearly trying to win Russia over and get Russia to contain China. This has been a goal of theirs for years. But nobody will ever trust America ever again when they can have 180 degree policy flips in 2 week, without any checks and balances. This is historical really, I don't think government policy has ever changed so much, so fast without some kind of coup or other violent takeover. Trump can offer up the rest of Europe on a sliver platter to Russia, and America can still never be a long term ally as long as the democrats has a chance of winning and immediately reverse all of Trump's changes. American appeasement to Russia does nothing but piss Europe off and send a signal that America is not a reliable partner.
Trump was also the one who attacked Nord Stream first with sanctions. Now his “offering” it back to the Russians when he was threatening the Europeans for buying it 8 years ago. The Russians will definitely remember that.
