The biggest recent soft power win came from foreigners getting cost of living pilled and seeing their safe developed cities. Cost of living has been good in China for a long time. Large well developed and safe cities have existed for over 10 years. Why didn't they like China back then? It all comes back to how incompetent the Chinese soft power department is. Of course, I understand thinking that perhaps China is too nice, especially to third worlders who are weaker than you but also act extremely entitled. However, one cannot just bomb all of their enemies into submission. The US 50 years ago understood that, which is why they built up many allies whereas they now are siphoning them dry. Don’t be surprised if in less than 2 decades, strong US allies like EU, five eyes, JP, KR, all end up being very pro China.

"Open" AI went closed sourced. Before Deepseek appeared, people were locked into OpenAI just like they were locked in Microsoft and others that are also closed source. These users could have (and probably would have) switched to Deepseek without open sourcing or even providing a localizing ability because the costs would be so much lower.
It's totally stupid to give up a major tech advantage. Look at all these closed source giants.
