The GFW is like a Swiss cheese for those who know the drill. There are plenty of places in China, like authorized hotels and office buildings, etc. where one can visit the blocked sites even without using VPN. If I remember correctly international mobile phones on roaming data plans can also access those sites directly.

The idea that GFW was some super censorship project was American propaganda in itself.

People not realizing VPN can easily be stomped out is also pure propaganda. I used to create AWS instances to access American Netflix from Canada (back when they had more licensed movies), it worked for about a year before they mass blocked AWS IPs. If a regular company like Netflix can stomp out an user with higher than average technical abilities (maybe you think I have a high opinion of myself), certainly the super CCP censors would have much stronger resources at their disposal and any VPN probably wouldn't last more than a week.
