To make a long story short, the Canadian government is finally kicking out these students who come to the country solely to find work and to eventually stay in Canada and become a citizen.
In other words, these international students, although we know where the vast majority originate from, are here either on false pretenses, or got scammed to come here.
The way the world works, like it or not, a citizen's interests comes first, and not a foreigner. So they get booted.
How does an international student get a work permit to work in Canada? My impression is that they do not provide one with a student visa or do they? If they apply here, then that is not allowed anymore, or that that is limited to 24 hours of work off campus. Not to sure, but either way, that makes coming to Canada under false pretenses to work while being an international student a less than ideal situation now.
If they protest, then it cannot be good for them. Which means it is good for a low wage Canadian worker aka a citizen.
Notice how they say Canada should value their contribution, while not mentioning how they flooded the labour pool, squeezing out jobs, or compare them with the Chinese students who come, study, spend their money and most of them to nearly all of them leave after graduation. The Chinese international students are not protesting that is for sure.
