Ye was not an unknown before this Olympics. She displayed the same amazing speed in the last freestyle lap in this video.

The reason is simple, China authority is not stupid.... It is not hard for Chinese authority to recognize that it is fully in China long term interest to ensure that any athlete representing China is drug free.

I should point out that bladerunner said "sporting bodies". Remember that these bodies have pressure put on them from the Chinese government, media and general public to perform. Chinese fans can be very vocal with criticism if they feel that athletes don't perform when they should do. So whilst it's in their interest to keep their athletes clean so that they don't get banned, it's also in their interests to ensure their athletes do well.

And I'm not saying that the Chinese swimming authority is currently engaged in mass doping/cheating, but it is always possible that they or their fellow sporting bodies feel the rewards of cheating outweigh the dangers.

If you think the official portraits of the Chinese athletes are bad look at this one from the German table tennisser Timo Boll.

The controversy over Yi Shiwen's performance is as ugly as the protests against the Chinese torch relays in 2008.

Despite the fact that the IOC came out and said that

, the media is still feeding the controversy using a string of unprovable allegations and innuendos.

Of course, nothing is impossible and any athlete is capable of doping. Just look at how Joyner and Armstrong were praised as examples to follow.

Hi guys.. If you post is missing or edited.. so be it. Knock off the silly arguments. Just enjoy the Olympics as they are. keep the rhetoric to a minimum. Discuss the London Games as you desire but be civil. I've read this entire thread and some of you need to let go of your hate or it shall consume you.

A few bits of news from today!

Ye Shiwen has

Michael Phelps is now

Two British male swimmers have

for the 200m breaststroke final by setting a new national record and a new PB - something I wasn't expecting. It would be nice if they could go even faster, but I have a feeling they'll just miss out on the medals.

Britain also picked up a silver medal in the

- Princess Anne got to hand out a medal to her own daughter, Zara Philips.

I think Miss Ye has answered her critics in the most effective style, by taking a second gold medal, this time in the Womens 200m Individual Medley.

I must say though that I deplore the poor sportsmanship displayed by the gentleman that made the original comments and that they are not only an insult to Miss Ye, but an act of disrespect to the whole Olympics Organisation, and totally at odds with the spirit of the occasion.

Now that the tests confirm Miss Ye as an outstanding Olympian, those responsible for disparaging remarks should issue public apologies to her or consider their positions.
