".....They don’t wait for children to show an interest in a particular sport. They do not rely on parents to pay for lessons to see if a budding athlete is committed enough to put hours of practice ahead of hanging out with friends. China scoops up young children based on their physical attributes – Ye’s abnormally large hands were spotted by a teacher – and ships them off to state training camps where winning gold is all that matters.

Start with an enormous population, add a national plan to identify gifted kids, back it all up with a well-funded and hyper-focused training program and it’s little surprise that China is doing so well in the pool, on diving platforms and in the gymnastics arena.

Regarding gymnasticsI dont think this method has given China any advantages over say America or Japan. In fact a quick look at the Olympic competition of yesteryearreveals that American women have performed miles better than their chinese counterpart, as did the Japanese men gymnasts in their glory years.

So it really comes as no surprise that they weren't able to retain their title or even medal in the team event in the current competition. In fact the way the Americans decimated the traditional compeititors in Russia China and Romania, makes a mockery of the top down management and training approch.

At this site you can scroll down to the bottom and pick any men's and women's gymnastic discipline and compare their respective successes by the amount of medals won from all the Olympics to 2008

If one watched the competition one could not help but notice that the American, Russian and Romanian team had a better mixture of size and strength to match the demands of the apparatus, whereas the Chinese girls were smaller on purpose. Perhaps this gave them the advantage on the beam, but disadvantaged them on the vault where strength is required and on the floor where a slightly larger size would command extra presence.
Therefore if things didn'.t go right for them on the beam and perhaps the uneven bars, they would be totally stuffed. In fact it did'nt even have to get that far. After Maroney the specialist vaulter nailded a 16+ first up in the first rotation and the whole team averaging 16, barring anything going wrong for the Americans , it was all over for the Chinese girls by simply basing it on their PB's.

"Statistics suggest Ye's performance in the 400m medley, which first prompted these questions, wasn't unprecedented. Her time of 4:28.43 was an improvement of about 2.44% on her time from the 2011 world championships, the last major international event she swam in. But in the same pool on Sunday in a different race—the semifinals of the 100-meter breaststroke—Ruta Meilutyte, a 15-year-old Lithuanian, shaved two seconds off of her pre-Olympic personal best. That performance represented a 3.1% improvement.

The raw speed of Ye's final 50-meter freestyle isn't unprecedented, either. In last year's World Championships in Shanghai, Great Britain's Rebecca Adlington swam the final 50 meters of the 800m freestyle final in 28.91 seconds, .02 second faster than Ye and 19 hundredths faster than Lochte's time from the 400m medley."

There could just be a very simple reason for Ye's performance improvements:

Also, she grew four inches during the last two years. Of course she improved her personal best by five seconds during the last two years. She grew up.

".... at 14, she was just over 5' 2" -- she's grown four inches since."

:)Have you been played into the hands of the western media by using total medals rather than the color?

Funny, If only the medal count is important, then why even bother to give different medal colours to the top 3 winners. Just give them one medal each. They wouldn't even need to compete anymore once they're in the top 3.

I think the medal count is an invention of the American Sports media. Which is hell bent on counting everything. The Olympics is about the competition and individual athletes. Not which country has the most medals. Just my opinion.

And I don't care too much for the Olympics at all. Too political...and most of the sports do nothing for me.

Every country tries to spin things their own way. The American method isn't too bad. The South Koreans rank by Medals per Capita. :D

In the end, if China comes out ahead even in the total medal count, I'd be proud of the athletes' achievement, and it will also be a confirmation of the Chinese people's dedication. If we put our minds to it, we can be the best.

Even if the US still has more total medals, the above still holds true. After all, it's telling that the top place for gold medals is not even a race anymore.
