It looks like China will not top the gold standing this time around. But the momentum is still there.

This Olympic games has been disaster for our weightlifting, shooting and gymnastics teams. They will cost us the gold medal race. A total flop, many are disappointed as we pour in alot of money into these sports. Disaster.

As i said in my earlier posts China will pick up the medal here and there but has got some long term problems in its gymnastic squad which started to show up in the last two worlds, particularly last year. Not only are the others catching up but in the last decade or so they seem to be concentrating on a couple of apparatuses with key performers. This is resulting in a lack of depth which is now beginning to show.

Since when was China dominant in shooting as most of the time the medals appeared to be evenly spread.?

Weight lifting is much the same. It wasnt a sport they dominated like. diving. . While good in the lighter weights, there was nothing special about them in the heavier classes.of which there are more?

The truth is, they just dont have the same medal opportunities in the sports they are good in. They tried to fix this by getting into rowing and cycling. In rowing they actually owned six world titles in 2008 from which they could have added olympic gold. However I think petty jealousies from other sporting bodies may have affected funding because the sport appears to have gone backwards in China. Cycling was also making good progress but that appears to have slowed down abit post 2008 Olympics.

Earlier on you asked how they might come up with 22golds Anyway I think they have an outside chance of coming up with 22 Golds
Gymnastics
1/Chelong Zhong in the Horizontal ?
2/Zhe Feng Parallel ?
(Thats if they are competing)
3/Yi Beng Chen Rings (execellent Chance
4/Lu Sui Balance Beam.....execellent chance
5/He Kexin Uneven Bars. (But I think shee needs Tweddle and Komova to put in sub par performances)

9/4 Diving (The Last Four On Offer)
10/ Rowing
Womens Single Sculls
Zhang Xixgun (Fingers crossed)
11/ Lightweight doubles ( Britain might just be too strong )
12/Womens Team Epee. ( Good chance if Korea threw their matches in China's favour)
13//Maybe one more chance in the Womens Sprint Cycling Kieren

14 Womens Trampoline
18// Badminton Four more on offer?
19 Zhen Wang 20k walk ?
21 2/Takwando 2 medals in the lighter class
22 Zou Shiming Boxing Light featherweight

HAHAHHAHHAHAA.... are you serious? You want to judge China's Olympic performance with NBA? I mean... why not compare US ping pong player with Chinese players?

Chinese national team do not just play in the Olympics. and their respective skill levels is irrelevant. Its the manner in which the two system encourages one to play.

We can dream. At this point I've already given up on the gold medal race. I wouldn't expect much from our gymnastics team, especially women. That bunch seems utterly clueless. We were robbed of a gold medal in cycling. Once track & field comes, team USA will get truck loads of medals. They also gave gold medals hopes in women's soccer, indoor and beach volleyball, tennis, Waterpolo, basketball, rowing. Man oh man.

We needed to close the gap on the Americans in swimming, but as well as we have done, it's still not enough to close the gap.

One thing is for sure, when the Americans win the medal tally, they will brag like there is no tomorrow after what happened in Beijing and considering the anti-Chinese sentiment that has increased in western media over the last few years due to the rise of china and western economic problems.

iirc the women's gymnastics team is plagued by injuries, every country has bad streaks. Don't forget china is making progress in other areas like swimming, cycling and athletics - which has been very weak or non-existent in the chinese olympics program. Overall I think china is more diverse in the medal tables than the US so in the long run if they continue to branch out, they won't have to be so reliant on monopolies in a handful of sports and instead give all sports equal coverage - this way when they run into a bad streak it won't completely devastate their medal tally.

Consider the fuss they've made just because china taking a couple of medals in swimming, imagine the howling they'll make in Rio against the next generation of chinese athletes in different sports.

on a side note, the current golden girl of American gymnastics is trained by a former chinese gymnasts.

Just look at the CHinesebasket ball team play and compare that to how the men in the MBA play the game.

I'm sure all the individualities will come out naturally when playing basketball in China starts to pay as much as the NBA. The same goes for other sports like football. Contrary to what some media may seem to portray, I think most parents in China still prefer their children to go through the usual educational path.
