Littoral Combat Ships (LCS)

...

I believe using two sextuple launchers for the NSM on the LPDs and on the LSD(x) which will use th San Antonio hull form would also be GREAT! 12 of those missiles would allow for great land support, as well as anti-shipping if needed...and they ought to pout the 16 cell Mk-41 VLS that the ships were designed to have room for as well.

...
coupla points to consider:
  • targeting (what radar, illuminator, ...) by vessels whose primary role is to get Marines ashore
  • tracking (what volume-search radar etc.)
  • CONOPS (would convoying be still needed for them IF ADDITIONAL BILLIONS WERE SPENT? yes/no under what threat level?)
I could go on in my comfortable chair, but I prefer to wait for the next Pentagon budget

They will add what they need if they decide to place the missiles on the vessels. That's pretty clear.

But time will tell. It may all be whstling in the wind.

At least this admin and the military people in positions to make a difference are trying to do that in the face of what they were handed.

launching missiles (other than RAM/SeaRAM) is not the task of an ARG, it should be the task of its escort (which could be frigates if the USN had any)

The San Antonios were designed to have VLS (16 cells), but were not fitted with them. The idea was to put ESSM onboard for self defense. Given the increase speed the newer missiles have or are going to have, the SA's probably do need the ESSM for as a bare minimum.

the main issues would be EDIT if there was such a thing as an LPD with ESSMs; there's no such a program of record
  1. sensors and
  2. CONOPs
not a VLS here or there, as in Today at 10:28 AM

a VLS here on there is an issue of LCSs which are unarmed even by standards of what Egypt (GOWINDs), Indonesia (SIGMAs), ... I could go up with armament ..., are getting in a similar displacement category

that's how the USN will be for the rest of the first half of this century, based on its own doctrine

Commander of Naval Surface Forces Vice Adm. Richard Brown told reporters on Friday ...

“We are very excited about that because the naval component commanders are screaming for LCSs because they know what they’re going to bring to the fight.”

let me see again,

the Pentagon very excited (it always is)

as commanders are screaming for LCSs (I've been screaming against LCSs so I must be wrong)

and commanders know what LCSs bring to the fight ... which is:

The ships were designed to perform single mission, and they’ll stick to that plan, Brown said. While he declined to offer specifics, it will likely involve crew training, partner operations, and fisheries enforcement, he said, though “that’s really up to the 7th Fleet commander.”
