Neither I think. I was actually pondering over the young mans position from a different aspect. Apart from it being easier, next to nobody would be aware of his past if he had been incarcerated in NZ. Upon his release,he could have gone back to China and got on with his life.

He was a young student who assaulted and robbed a taxi driver.What we dont know is whether he intended to kill the taxi driver.That would have to play an important part on what to actually charge him with.
In the end the young guy was out of his comfort zone so he fled back to China. However had he the presence of mind and been more familiar with NZ he probably would have concluded that it was better to take his chances with the NZ justice system.

Then we have the case of a Chinese national applying for a loan of $100,000 from one of our banks. It was approved but they mistakingly gave him nine million nine hundred thousand dollars too much.
He took off back to HK/China and disappeared with a sizeable chunk of it despite the best attempts by the Chinese police to locate him.
Hmmmmmm amazing what a few mil can do
