Didn’t they say they didn’t want to buy the drone earlier for cost reasons?
They are leasing Predator this time round not the Reaper and thinking of purchasing Predator... a smaller and I guess cheaper drone... there is no cost of leasing provided in the article tho... I wonder if they will be thinking up a time-sharing subscription option in the future due to cost concerns...

That is some of the most ludicrous procurement process I have ever seen.

1) First of all, India claims to be a superpowah. So buying Predators or Reapers shouldn't be an issue for a 'superpowah' that claims to be more powerful than China.

2) Why does India wanna lease the Predators for 1 year? To try them out? Are they still stuck in 2009? What is there not to know about the Predator drones in 2020? India already have experience operating IAI Heron drones anyway.

3) If Predators and Reapers are too expensive. There are already cheaper alternatives in Israel. India's favorite weapons supplier. So it's kinda pointless to go buy predators.

The illogical decisions by India to fast track the procurement of US made drones, winter gear, and logistics agreement with the US is very telling. India have become Uncle Sam's vassal both officially and in action. Just like DPP Taiwan and Morrison Australia.

Watch out Russia, France, and Israel. Better not forecast too much defence revenue from India in the future. Uncle Sam is pushing you guys out! LOL...

Another strategic move to drain India's resources away from economic development. But hey at least this one benefits someone other than US/French/Russia MIC

Yea, tbh I really don’t understand Indian procurement decisions...

However, in this case I can kind of mental gymnastic a semi-reasonable explanation... they operate Heron and are talking about procuring more but from what I know India only have the older surveillance version with no weapons attachments, also according to what’s available on the webs the unit cost of a Predator seems to be less than even the older version of Heron they already operate. So in this case depending on how the deal is structured and how quickly the the Predators can be delivered, they might be able to get their hands on a bunch of armed hand me down Predators, operation ready and more bang for bucks, whilst having the same control facilities for the bigger brother, the Reaper, as well for later procurement.

I guess India as the super-est super superpower, their thinking process is just too up there that what we see as incomprehensible and stupid, make prefect sense in their amazing grant plan...

As the saying does, it takes two to tango. I think this odd Indian predator deal might even been American driven, whereby America effectively operate predators from Indian airbases to monitor PLA activity and share the Intel with India.

If that is the case, then India could be falling into an American trap.

What do you think will happen if predator drones, who are supposed to be Indian owned and operated, fires all it’s missile payload on PLA boarder positions?

That’s the biggest worry with America weapons, you can be assured there are backdoors, kill switches and trackers all over them. You could be flying your new predator drone happily one day and it suddenly goes blue screen of death on you and the next thing you know PLA munitions are raining down across all your positions.

The Indians will swear blind that this is unprovoked Chinese aggression, the Americans will back them publicly while laughing their arses off in private as they do all they can to fan the flames of the conflict and paint China as the bad guy.

I think Indians are jealous of what PLA has.

New Delhi: The morale of Chinese's People Liberation Army (PLA) troops deployed along Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh under harsh weather and terrain conditions is extremely low, top intelligence agencies said.

To boost the troops' morale, China has started to set up recreation centres comprising a fitness centre, heated swimming pools, hot tubs, library and other facilities, sources said.

China has deployed thousands of its troops along the LAC with India in a bid to change the status quo on the borders. Now with the winter setting in and the temperature dipping to as low as minus 30-degree Celsius, the troops' condition has worsened with less rotation on the ground. "This is a matter of concern for the PLA," said a source, adding that PLA troops' "morale is extremely low now".

For some reason this article reads more like projection than an analysis...

So providing some entertainment to bored troops at a boring ass border where soon it would be more difficult to move around, rotate troops or even go on patrol means the troops have low morale... then I guess the armed forces around the world have been doing it wrong for the last few decades!

Makes one wonder! It explains why the Indian armed forces position seems so spartan, soldier psychology be damned, morale come out of nowhere and guts is the only thing needed to win wars, seems India has been learning history at least... just not sure if the example of French army thinking at the beginning of WW1 is the right way to go in the modern age tho...
